CLOIS One-shot loosely based around the events of Season 8 episode 10, 'Bride' (written by Al Septien and Turi Mayer, but the thoughts of Lois here were written by moi) R&R!

Lois felt like such a fool. Like Clark Kent could actually feel something for someone like her! We're just…incompatible. She thought sadly. She looked around her at all the other guests in the Kent Farm, here celebrating the union of her cousin Chloe and Jimmy Olsen.

Chloe whizzed past Lois with Jimmy in tow, as a jazzy number played on the dance floor. "You did great Lois, thank you so much – !" Lois heard her yell as they got lost in the crowd. Lois managed a feeble smile, but her heart told a completely different story. She needed to get out. She couldn't breathe in here.

The house was relatively quiet as Lois stepped over the threshold to escape the racket of the Barn, with only a handful of the hired help left scattered around clearing up the mess from the cooking and decorating. Looking for some peace and quiet, Lois headed upstairs to the silent landing, and found herself outside Clark's bedroom. She hadn't intentionally taken herself here and had been walking in an almost dream state as she kept turning those thoughts over and over in her head. She had always thought that the banter that she and Clark shared was just that – innocent banter. Had she felt this way all along? She wasn't sure of anything anymore. All she knew was that these feelings had crept up on her like a shadow in the darkness before she could turn around and give them what for.

She stood before the door, and even though she knew the room would be empty, she was afraid. Lois wasn't used to these feelings – sure her relationships in the past had been intense, with Ollie, with AC, with Wes…but they weren't like how she felt about Clark. "Oh, Smallville, what do you do to me?" she whispered to herself, moving her hand towards the door knob. The door opened quietly, and Lois crept in, and sat down on the bed in the dark to think.

Her heart had skipped a beat – no, not one – several, when she had heard Clark say that beautiful speech "It's really hard for me to put my feelings into words. But from the moment we met, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you." She had honestly believed for just one moment that he felt those feelings too; whatever they were. She thought…he felt like 'the right person'. They were 'Lois and Clark'. It just…fitted. It worked. She rested her head in her hands and sighed. Why couldn't things be straightforward? When she was near Clark, all she wanted to do was grab him by the arms and kiss him so hard that both of them would feel like they were flying and would never want to come back down. She had to resist every urge to stop herself doing that. Her stomach did back flips in his presence. She felt jittery and happy when she thought about him. And she saw the way he treated people…he was so respectful of humanity and those around him in every way. He was incredible. It struck Lois that it seemed almost no wonder why Chloe had loved Clark for so long.

But when they had danced before…when they'd nearly kissed…her heart could melt at the memory. Their eyes had met, and for a moment it was like the whole world disappeared. Lois had wanted to stay there for ever. And she knew that the memory would haunt her, and that she would dream of all the possibilities that could have been. That would never be.

It broke her heart.

And it had all come crumbling down. And Lois knew her chance was gone.

She needed alcohol. Now.
