The blackest night of the year felt like the brightest within his heart. He gripped her hand so tightly, that he thought he might break her petite fingers, but she still didn't say a word. The shy girl just stared at her feet as he navigated her through the pitch black night.
To his surprise, there weren't that many people on the streets that night. Their path was dimly lit by a few streetlights, and occasionally a house with the lights still on inside. He wondered if Mitchie was cold, but he was too nervous to ask. She had to have been, with the costume she was wearing. She was just too adorable as an angel, with wings and a halo. It was surprising how she could look even more gut-wrenchingly beautiful than she usually did.
The sky was unforgiving; it just seemed to get darker as they walked on. They were almost there. Every time he took a step, a muffled step from her flats would echo; a rhythm that was so very inspiring to him. The only other sound was the sound of the small rocks, disturbed by their feet, rolling along across the street as they got closer to their destination.
Relief overcame him. The comfort of warmth, and the release of intense feelings emerged on contact. Her body was as perfectly sculptured as he thought. Her hair just as soft. Her lips just as irresistible as he imagined. He didn't think there was anything else in the world that he had ever wanted more. With one look at her big, refreshing smile, he knew she felt it too.
On Halloween, the evilest of days, the darkest of hours; ironically, he had his angel to protect him, his guiding light and salvation. He felt invincible, but an ounce of disappointment. The day that was just beginning in his heart, was ending through the cruel and unforgiving daylight. Soon, this magic would fade, tucked inside their hearts for another day. And the sun would shine in all its glory to reveal another fall day, the start of a new month.
And once again he would be forced to hide this beautiful secret from the rest of the world.
