"Clary! You need to wake up or you'll be late for your first day of school." my mom said. I internally groaned. After my father's death two months go, I went through the transition process of moving to live with my mother. But now that was over with. Mom thought it was time for me to start school with my older brother, Jonathon. Let the torture begin, I think to myself.

I slowly get up and start getting ready for school. I put on my favorite pair of jeans, faded with holes in the knees and right thigh, a black tank top, a navy blue fishnet shirt, my black combat boots, and to top it all off, I throw on my favorite leather jacket. I put on minimal make-up, eyeliner and some mascara to make my emerald green eyes seem brighter, and I let my fiery red hair hang down my back in its natural loose curls. I take a quick look in the floor length mirror on the back of my door before I go into the kitchen for a quick breakfast.

"Morning Clary," says my brother, Jon, "Excited for your first day?" he asks.

"Ecstatic." I tell him, m voice dripping with sarcasm.

He laughs. "Do you want a ride?" he asks me.

"Sure, just let me grab some breakfast." I say.

After I eat my breakfast of toast and a glass of milk, we get into Jon's car and start the drive to school. We drive in silence before Jon asks me, "Are you to try to make friends here?" and I have to stop myself from snapping at him that I don't need any friends. He knows that I've never been the best at making friends, especially since I can be extremely shy around new people. "Clary?"

"Jon, you know how I am at a new school." I say.

"I know, but I was hoping that maybe you would at least try to make an effort here. Promise me you'll try to make at least one friend?"

I looked at my brother. He was light skinned, not as pale as me but not very dark either, with silver blonde hair and green eyes. and in those green eyes, I saw how concerned he was for me. He knew I could take care of myself but still insisted on trying to look after me. In those eyes, I saw how much he wanted me to have a better life than the one I was living before. So, to make Jon happy, I promised that I would try to make some friends.

When we arrived at the school, I went straight to the office to receive my schedule and my locker number and combination. After finding my locker, however, I wasn't able to open it because a boy was standing directly in front of it, trying to ignore the flirting girl beside him. The boy was tall, with golden hair and eyes. He had to be the most breathtaking person I had seen in my entire life. It was only when I realized that he was staring right at me that I finally tore my gaze away form him.

When I looked back up I was met by the golden boy standing directly in front of me, smiling down at me charmingly.

"Hi," he said, "I'm Jace. And your name is?"
