"What? Did you get that from one of your books?" Ron spat as Hermione sat, dejected, on the common room floor.

"How dare you criticize me for being smart! It's not my fault you don't even know how to brew a potion unless I help you with it." Hermione retorted.

"Do you have one ounce of emotion, Hermione? Just tell me. You won't EVER find a man who will love you if you don't even have love in yourself. You'll waste away, old and ugly, in front of some stupid book like 'Hogwarts, A History'." Ron said, hardly above a whisper.

Hermione just stared into the brown eyes of her redheaded friend. How could he be so blind? She had been in love with him for so long. Her brain, however, had forbidden her to think of such a boy. He was led not by his brain, but his heart. He didn't have the answers to all the questions in class, he didn't know the enchantments of every room in Hogwarts, but she had fallen for him. She had fallen for him and she now had to pay for her stupid misjudgment of Ron Weasley. He was not a softhearted boy, nor a comforting soul. He was mean, cruel and contemptuous. He mocked her every time she picked up a book. Yet, a pang in the back of her heart showed her that what she had thought about him was not true. He was kind and gentle...but he was not one to show it. If only she could show him the truth about her also...

"Ronald Weasley, I cannot believe you have misjudged me so severely. I love. I am not a cold creature feeding off books." Hermione answered, her eyes brimming with hot tears.

"You say you love? Prove it." Ron said, sitting down next to her.

Her eyes widened at the last two words...prove it. She looked at him, taking in his every feature. She knew she could prove it. She would do it too. Would she have consequences for going with her heart for the first time after many past mistakes? She had stopped following her heart because it hurt. She was so mean to Ron because she loved him. She called him things like, 'stupid git' and 'crazy oaf' because she had feelings for him. She put her hand on his cheek and his eyes filled with confusion. She had a feeling that was not the response he was expecting. His eyes softened and grabbed her hand.

"I love you, Ron." Hermione whispered.

At this, Ron leaned over to her and gave her a passionate kiss. She was taken aback by his straight-forwardness, but none-the-less enjoyed the comfort he filled her with. His arms found their way to her waist and she felt sudden warmth that his arms gave by the touch. He pulled away, with a lopsided grin on his face. He was a little flushed, which made his freckles a little less noticeable.

"I love you too, Hermione." Ron said, caressing her cheek.

"I guess everyone has a little emotion, don't you think?" Hermione said, smiling as heartfelt warmth overwhelmed her body. She began to cry, but now with tears of happiness.

"Oh, 'Mione, don't cry." He said softly, wiping away her tears.

"I'm sorry...this just feels...magical." She said, laughing at the irony.

Here they were in a school for witchcraft and wizardry and she says something is magical. Ron just smiled and pulled her close. Maybe a combination of opposites really does attract. Holding each other by the fire, they fell asleep.
