One Last Song
A/N: This is a random fic about Rue's death, told in her point of view. My first published fanfiction!
P.S. The dialogues in italics are the ones actually used in the book.
I was entrapped, stuck in a net. I wished I had been more careful from the start. I attempted to find a hole large enough for me to escape, but the more I struggled, the net seemed to tighten harder. Frightened, I let out soft whimpers, and I hoped with all my heart that Katniss will come.
Unable to stand it any longer, a shrill scream burst out of my mouth, and then it frantically called for Katniss. I looked behind, and I saw a figure, coming closer and closer to me. I could hear Katniss calling my name, but it sounded as if it was from far away. The incoming figure looked shorter, stockier than Katniss' figure, and I easily deducted that it was not Katniss. "Katniss!" I screamed louder, and I grabbed at the netting, trying to pry them apart, but it was futile.
Suddenly, Katniss appeared from nowhere, looking at me with shock. I reached one of my hands out to her, croaking out her name. I could hear a whoosh from behind, and before I knew it, red was oozing out of my stomach, and a spear jutted out of it. Katniss gave a cry of anger, and shot an arrow towards my attacker, and I heard a thud from the ground behind me.
"Are there more? Are there more?" Katniss cried, looking around wildly with hardness in her eyes.
"No," I replied weakly, but she didn't seem to hear me. I repeated the words over and over again until she heard me. I curled up in a fetal position, trying to stop the pain. "This is the end," I thought, "The end of my life."
Katniss held my outstretched hand, gripping it tightly. I fixed my eyes on her, ignoring the red spots that were appearing in my vision.
"You blew up the food?" I asked weakly.
"Every last bit."
"You have to win," I told her, mentally wincing at my pain.
"I'm going to. Going to win for both of us now," she vowed me. A cannon fired, and I felt Katniss' grip from me loosen.
"Don't go," I said, using much of my strength to hold her hand tighter.
"Course not. Staying right here," Katniss said softly, and placed my head on her lap, combing through my hair. A sigh escaped me, and I asked her one last request.
"Sing."
Katniss looked thoughtful for a moment, and she began to sing a haunting, yet beautiful tune. I looked at the sky, listening to the words.
Deep in the meadow, under the willow,
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow,
Lay down your head, and close your eyes,
And when they open, the sun will rise,
Here it's safe, and here it's warm,
Here the daisies guard you from every harm,
Here your dreams are sweet, and tomorrow brings them true,
Here is the place where I love you.
My eyes fluttered shut, and I felt myself growing weaker and weaker.
Deep in the meadow, hidden far away,
A cloak of leaves, a moonbeam ray,
Forget your woes, and let your troubles lay,
And when again it's morning, they'll wash away
Here it's safe, and here it's warm,
Here the daisies guard you from every harm,
Here your dreams are sweet, and tomorrow brings them true,
Here is the place where I love you.
Her voice traveled far, and it echoed among the trees. I heard a mockingjay cry out, assuring me that all will be okay, and I descended to the darkness willingly.
A/N: And that's it! Rue's death, told in her POV. *Cries, and uses the whole box of tissues* I wish this was one of my best pieces of writing, but it's not. =( Well, I hope you like it, and please, review!
