Thunderstorms
Thunderstorms were never Draco's favorite weather conditions. In fact, they were his least favorite. Even when he was younger, Draco had an aversion to thunderstorm, choosing to stay with his mother or hole himself up in his room. As an adult, things were no different except for the fact he couldn't hide in his bedroom. He did escape to the small library (really just a bedroom converted into such a space) or the small study he shared with Harry.
Harry always knew where to find Draco when there was a thunderstorm. For years he tried to make sense of the other man's fear per se of thunderstorms. He asked on many occasions why exactly Draco disliked them and all Draco would say is, "'They make me uncomfortable.'" It never failed though, whenever the sky darkened and the clouds overhead rolled, Draco skillfully slipped away undetected to wait out the storm. Never once did he seek out the company of Harry who he'd been with for seven years already.
That afternoon was no different as an unpredicted storm swept in over the house Harry and Draco resided. The clouds were an angry dark gray and lightning zipped in brilliant flashes across the sky. Draco noticed but stayed put on the couch next to Harry who was reading over some paper from work. As the sky lit up again, Draco made to move. He knew what followed such a light show and that was the resounding crash of thunder. The very thing he hated most about storms. Harry noticed and as Draco stood and the windows shook from the residual vibrations. Hand gripping his arm, Draco looked down at his partner in confusion.
"Stay," came the polite command. Being less than graceful, Draco plunks himself back down in his spot, discomfort painting his face.
The man crosses his arms firmly across his chest and pressed himself as far into the couch as he could go. He didn't know why exactly he stayed there. He could easily get up again and hide like he always did, but something told him he wouldn't be able to this time. Draco guessed he'd just have to sit tight until the storm passed enough to be bearable. It wasn't that bad of a storm anyways. Draco winced as another forceful clap resounded overhead, this time shaking the house.
Harry set his papers aside and studied the man next to him who resolutely stared out the window, mouth pressed into a thin line and whitened with pressure. He would finally get to the bottom of Draco's problem with innocent thunderstorms.
"Draco," Harry beckoned, "come here." Draco turned his head but kept his body rigid.
"Why?"
"Just come here." Harry held his arm open and Draco reluctantly scooted into the embrace.
Harry pulled Draco to his chest and slowly but surely the latter relaxed into the embrace. As another rumble roared through the darkness and faded into the distance Draco buried his face in Harry's shirt front.
"Hey, it's all right. Why exactly do you hate thunderstorms so much?"
Draco lifted his face away from Harry's chest. "I don't know. I have always felt uncomfortable around them. They are so angry and they scare me, ok?" He finished the last bit defensively. Never had Draco admitted that to anyone, and Harry knew Draco didn't open up easy, even for him.
"So that's why you always leave? You don't want me to see you're scared?"
"Yes," Draco gritted out. Harry placed a kiss on his head.
"You're silly, Draco. Just relax, I'm here." Again, Draco buried his face in Harry's chest and breathed in the other man's scent.
The storm lasted an hour more. Draco still hated every second of it and couldn't suppress the shudders which ran through is body at particularly loud claps of thunder. Having Harry's arms safely around him did add a level of comfort Draco hadn't felt for many years. He would always hate thunderstorms, but with Harry maybe they would tolerable.
