Chapter One: A Debt to Be Paid

A lonely figure walked through the night, draped in a heavy black cloak. Rain fell in thick impenetrable sheets as thunder rumbled overhead. The figure walked down a small path in the marshland, a few minutes later it arrived at lone house. The figure approached the house and knocked on the door. The sounds of shuffling came from within. Then a moment later an Argonian opened the door. The cloaked figure spoke "Your debts are long past due Kal'zi."

The Argonian blinked, its reptilian eyes locked with the figure's. "Come in John; let usss talk thisss over my friend."

"Spare me the hospitality, Kal'zi." John said as he shoved past Kal'zi and entered the house.

Kal'zi shut the door and turned to face John "Ssit, please sssit sso we can talk like civilized creaturess."She said in her serpentine voice and gestured to a stool in the middle of the room. Kal'zi walked over to a basket and took two cups and a bottle of wine from it. She filled the cups and set the bottle down. John looked at it disdainfully and sat. Kal'zi handed him a cup. She then pulled up another stool and sat next to him.

"Now you where sssaying ssomething about debtsss?" Kal'zi said

John took a sip of the wine. He rolled it around in his mouth and then feeling satisfied that it was safe swallowed.

"Ah yes, you see my boss says you owe him some 1000 gold in gambling debts. He sent me here to collect them." John took another drink of wine "He told me that you have three choices."

"What are these choicesss?" Kal'zi asked as she sipped at her wine.

"One: you pay the gold now and all is forgiven, Two: you don't pay the gold and become a slave, Three: You don' pay the gold and resist becoming a slave and I kill you and bring your head to my boss. It's your choice."

Kal'zi paled her, hand started to shake. She dropped her cup. Red wine stained the floor " I-I n-need more time I-I h-have no money to give-"

John shook his head "Then I guess you only have two choices left."

Kal'zi stood quickly and drew a dagger.

"Wrong choice my friend." John said as he stood and drew a broad sword.

Kal'zi lunged forward. John easily side-stepped her and plunged his sword into her gut. Kal'zi sunk to the ground, her eyes wide in horror as her red blood mixed with the wine that had so recently resided in her cup. John knelt down. "You should have chosen to be a slave," he told her.

Kal'zi's eyes darted back and forth between her killer and a pile of blankets in a corner. John followed her gaze. "Are you hiding something from me Kal'zi?" he asked

Kal'zi shook her head no "Krynn're" She whispered so no one else could hear her. With that last word she died.

John watched her die, thinking he heard her say something. Then he wiped his sword clean on Kal'zi's body. He then stood and walked over to the pile of blankets. He pulled the top one aside. He smiled at what lay beneath it. John looked at what was left of his wine. He tilted his head back, drained it and threw the cup down.

'This is perfect' he thought 'just perfect'
