A/N: I happened to be in a Jetko mood…so I wrote this little…thing… ^-^" It's set on the ship to Ba Sing Se. It's pretty short, too. Enjoy (?)
A hazy fog shrouded the ship's large deck, giving it a strange, somehow eerie aura under the soft light of the full moon. I made my way quietly across the floor, stopping to run my fingers across the iron railing, subtly the only thing keeping me from a potential watery grave. Mist sprayed up from the ocean, speckling my neck and face with its cool touch. I looked up at the large white orb of the moon, faintly smiling to myself and relaxing my shoulders. It had been a long day and, despite my tired body and this undesirable time of night, my brain was buzzing a mile a minute. Thoughts blazed like wildfire, spreading rapidly until I heard nothing, saw nothing. Just memories, and the glimmering moon. Every night as a child when I couldn't sleep, my mother would tell me stories about the waterbenders, and the moon's powerful effect on them. We would sit out in the gardens, and she would hold my hand as we watched the wispy nighttime clouds drift in their lazy way past the moon, casting shadows over us until we were bathed in moonlight once again. I sighed and closed my eyes, tears brimming as I became lost in the reminiscence of what felt almost like a dream.
"Lee! What's up? Pulling an all-nighter?"
I immediately tensed and swiped at my eyes, struggling to regain my composure in the presence of another person. I spat out, "What do you want?"
Footsteps signaled an approach until I saw a slender silhouette out of the corner of my eye, accompanied by a telltale wheat stalk and shaggy brown hair. I turned my face away, still unsure of my emotional stability.
"What do you want, Jet?" I repeated, when met with silence.
Another pause settled in over us, and I sucked in a breath before turning to face him. He was indifferent, staring at me with an empty gaze. Almost imperceptibly, his jaw muscle twitched, and he let out a soft sigh. He took a step forward, earning a step back from me, my guard up. He took another step, and another, until I had backed up enough so that I was pressed against the rail. My eyes narrowed suspiciously as he cast his eyes downward.
"She could still be out there, Lee." Jet murmured sadly, his voice almost a whisper.
My eyes widened considerably. "What are you-"
"Your mother. I know you miss her. It's nothing to be ashamed of." His eyes flickered up to mine, a serious expression on his face. "I know what it's like to lose someone. To hurt," He raised his hand, fingers brushing lightly over my scar. "…and to be hurt."
I clenched my jaw, turning my face away from him once again. Anger had slowly started to boil, deep in my chest. "How could you know?! You can't! Everyone says they understand, but no one can understand what it was like to lose her! No one can understand what it's like to lose the only person who ever truly loved them! No one!" I knew I was being unfair, but I didn't care. The tears I had been holding in streamed down my cheeks, and there was nothing I could do to stop them.
"Lee-" He reached out in an attempt to console me, but I jerked away, pushing off from the railing and stepping around him, running as fast as I could to no particular place, just…away.
