Just a little idea that came into my head. Story is based on the song Just a Dream by Carrie Underwood. Yeah, I know, I've written a story based on a Carrie Underwood song before, but I like this one better. A lot better. MOVING ON…

It was two weeks after the day she turned 18
All dressed in white
Going to the church that night
She started the car and drove; her mind set taking her there without think. Her hands were white as they clutched the steering wheel.
She had his box of letters in the passenger seat
Sixpence in a shoe
Something borrowed, something blue
She paused for a red light. Unable to control herself, she reached for the letter sitting at the top of the box. The messily scrawled Dear Claire forced out more years.
And when the church doors opened up wide
She put her veil down
Trying to hide the tears
Oh she just couldn't believe it
She heard trumpets from the military band
And the flowers fell out of her hand
The tears didn't stop. The fuzzy feeling of disbelief still sizzled through her.
Baby why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go?
Why couldn't he be here? It was all she ever wanted.
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm looking from a distance
Standing in the background
She felt disembodied, as if she wasn't even really there.
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now
Whispers swirled, piteous in her direction. It only made her feel worse, like she was causing everyone else more pain.
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream
If this isn't a dream, she thought, I may never recover.
The preacher man said let us bow our heads and pray
Lord please lift his soul, and heal this hurt
She felt so much hurt and loss that it felt like physical pain, destroying her from the heart.
Then the congregation all stood up and sang
The saddest song that she ever heard
It was beautiful, but heart-achingly sad. Was there such a thing? How could you find a balance?
Then they handed her a folded up flag
And she held on to all she had left of him
Oh, and what could have been
They could've gotten married, had children, spent their lives together. But now, there was no chance.
And then the guards rang one last shot
And it felt like a bullet in her heart
Claire was so sad that when those guards rang, she almost wished it was a bullet in her heart, ending all the pain, and seeing him again.
Baby why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go?
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream
All for a war. Yet another life ended, another heart broken.
So? What do you think? I know it's short, but it's a songfic. Review. Flame or compliment, I don't care.
