Prompt: Swan Queen high school prom.

Not a ton of prom in it but you'll get the gist ;)

They'd gone through the pictures and enjoyed a meal with their friends, taken even more pictures, drank punch, and slipped off their heels before they danced for hours. One had even been crowned prom queen, donning a glittery tiara for the rest of the evening. They'd been next to each other the entirety of the evening, but not for a minute had they been alone.

The sky was glittering with stars and the April air had just a little bit of bite to it when Regina found Emma sitting on a bench out in the garden. The blonde's legs were tucked up underneath the creme colored gown, her heels abandoned on the ground below her. Regina smiled, knowing that Emma had only worn heels because Regina was wearing heels and Emma hadn't wanted to be shorter than her.

She stood watching Emma many minutes, watching as the blonde closed her eyes and tilted her head back, listening to the sounds of the garden around her. A bird chirped a few feet away and oddly enough, the blonde smiled and nodded.

"You know, the rumor is your mother can understand animals. Did you inherit that genetic trait?"

She'd scared Emma; the blonde practically jumped a foot off the bench. "Jesus Regina, I didn't... I didn't know you were there."

"Thought you could run off without me noticing hmm?" She slowly approached the bench, lifting her black gown so she could sit on the bench properly without ruining it.

"I needed some air. That's all."

"I see."

Moments passed, the two listening to the noises of the garden and not saying anything to the the other.

"You know, I thought this was some kind of joke; you asking me to be your prom date. I thought it was just some way to get back at your mom after the whole Robin scandal or some way to humiliate me because your mom hates mine. I honestly imagined some kind of Carrie scenario actually. Had a nightmare about it last night," Emma paused, taking a moment to look at Regina next to her. "When they announced my name as prom queen tonight, at first I thought it was a joke, and then I thought surely, your friends would pour pig's blood on me when I got up to the stage. But none of that happened. You've been by my side all evening and have been nothing but the perfect prom date. So my question, Regina, is... why?"

Emma wasn't looking at Regina but instead stared off at the fountain burbling in the middle of the garden, watching as the fairy lights reflected off the moving water. She didn't see Regina's hand reach for her chin or that Regina had leaned closer to her.

"Emma," Regina whispered, pulling the blonde's face toward her, brown eyes looking into green. "You know, I often wonder how you can be so completely oblivious."

Regina's soft, plump lips pressed against Emma's much to Emma's shock. But then they were kissing and Regina's tongue was begging for entrance. Regina's hands were cupping Emma's face and Emma's right hand found Regina's hip, gently placing it there more as a way to keep herself from floating away with glee.

The sound of heels clicking and a wolf whistle farther away pulled them apart and when the two girls looked up, they saw Kathryn grinning a few feet away.

"It's about damn time, Regina Mills. I was getting sick of listening to you talk about wanting to kiss her. Hurry up ladies, we're leaving in ten minutes to head to the after prom party." And without waiting, Kathryn turned and left, joining hands with Fred at the edge of the garden.

"You... you've been wanting to do this?" Emma asked, loving the way Regina's hands felt on her face.

"Yes, for a very long time." Regina leaned in and once again kissed Emma, a short and sweet one this time.

"But what about Robin?" Emma whispered, her hand raising up to rest on Regina's.

"Oh, he was just a beard."
