A/N: I wrote this because I'm...feeling depressed I suppose. It didn't come out the way I had originally planned but I'm too lazy to change it. Hope you like it anyway.
Yusuke POV
Man these missions were getting stupid; what is it with girly man-demons trying to steal things from obviously guarded places? This time it was a guy with butterfly wings [good god] trying to take some sacred jewel that increased powers…or something. I stopped listening to Koenma in the beginning.
Kuwabarra bragged to Yukina about how he'd 'kicked ass and I complained to Keiko about the sound of his voice. …Hiei had…gone god knows where. For some reason he hated us. Who am I kidding? We were annoying.
…Kurama sat in the corner as we all laughed, tending to our wounds and making jokes about what a pain in the ass we were. Foxboy just sat with blood soaking into his shirt. He had that far-off look, but he almost looked disappointed.
"Y'know…it seems like every time we go on one of these trips, you're the one who comes back the most bloody," I joked, "You aint suicidal, are ya?"
…He didn't reply; his eyes weren't on me, he couldn't see me grinning. But his face looked guilty. He was-
"Jesus!" I crawled back a little, sitting in a crouched position, feeling defensive, "Kurama…" The others stared at me, either thinking I was a lunatic or wanting to know why I would yell at Kurama of all people.
His eyes were heavy, guilt clear on the surface. …I realized that, for once, he wasn't wearing a mask. He seemed raw, hurt; it made me sick.
"You seem surprised," he muttered, tilting his head to look me in the eye. Sanguine dripped in small puddles. I couldn't even think of anything to say. It seemed pointless now.
…It made sense, but at the same time it didn't. As far as any of us knew he'd never tried to off himself. …But he was always the first one to block an attack, take on the dangerous ones, throw himself off the edge of a cliff.
He wanted to die with dignity.
"Dying won't bring him back, you know." I couldn't look at him; I looked at the wall. He gave a single nod. "And this Kuronue guy?" I continued, "He wouldn't want you to be that stupid." I stopped talking. Bringing up anymore might just push him further.
It was silent. "Just…don't be stupid okay?"
I handed him bandages and he looked at me, very serious, very quiet.
There were things he couldn't tell me…
