"I can see everything... all that is... all that was... all that ever could be." Rose Tyler

He'd been a bit hesitant when Jason Gideon had first approached him about joining the FBI, and not without good reason. He'd never been particularly comfortable with guns, and his current regeneration was no exception. And joining a team of people whose job it was to get inside people's heads and discover what made them tick, what they would do and why was a quick way to have his secret found out. And for once, he didn't want to be the Doctor, the Lonely God or the Oncoming Storm.

He just wanted to be Spencer Reid, somewhat socially awkward genius but basically normal human. He wanted to blend in, be part of something. Maybe even have friends.

But after a few years of nothing but study and other academic pursuits he'd been feeling a little restless, centuries of dashing around saving civilizations leaving him unable, or at least unwilling, to seclude himself in libraries or laboratories for very long. So he'd taken Gideon up on his offer, fiddled with the chameleon arch enough to make himself only physically human and moved the TARDIS to Virginia.

It took a while for him to get used to how having a human body muted his temporal senses, and he hated how he couldn't pilot the TARDIS through time without them. But he contented himself with the knowledge that he could at least still travel in space if he wanted, which for the moment at least he didn't.

It was nice to be able to call somewhere home for the first time in far too long. And as much as he disliked his gun, would use it only when absolutely necessary, he did like his work. He loved using his mind to help save people.

And he loved the family he was gaining at the BAU, even if their need to protect him did take a bit of getting used to. He was used to being the protector, after all, but even when it chafed he still got a warm fuzzy feeling in the pit of his stomach because he knew it was because they cared about him. It was nice. And as soon as his current time line caught up with theirs and he could talk to them again, he knew Martha and Donna would be thrilled for him.

It was a good life, with a good family. It was precisely what he needed. And maybe one day he'd tell Gideon exactly what the other man had done when he'd come looking to recruit him. One day. But not just yet.
