Away From It All
Harry Potter, the Boy-Who-Just-Wanted-a-Nice-Place-To-Get-Away-From-It-All, found himself a nice quiet sanctuary under a distant tree overlooking Black Lake. He loosened Hedwig from his arm, and the white owl joyously hooted as she flew off, banking lazily with the wind to soar in the cooling fall winds.
Harry smiled, knowing he hadn't been attending to Hedwig's needs with all of his other preoccupations. The owl had tolerated his neglect, mostly, sometimes nipping gently at his fingers or giving him a sharp nip to focus his attention when he was drifting off into space instead of doing his homework. He sometimes wondered if Hedwig was conspiring with Hermione in the homework department. Sighing to himself, he pulled out the writing notebook Hermione had given him for his birthday. He wasn't using it for homework, instead choosing to use it as a journal for his garbled thoughts. He paused as he realised the next page had Hermione's fine script.
Dear Harry,
I found this quote in a book while I was doing some light reading over the summer. It hit home with me. We do amazing things, Harry, but sometimes I feel like I am so terribly ordinary. I feel as though I am not as good of a friend as I should be.
The quote is from Marianne Williamson:
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."
I know you get sick of me pestering you to do better with your homework, Harry, but I believe in you. I believe you are powerful beyond measure. You are capable of so much, but sometimes, I think you get caught up with the wrong people telling you that you're nothing special. You give me this look like I am threatening you with the Cruciatus curse every time I ask if your homework is done. Don't think I didn't notice, Harry! I'm oblivious sometimes, but not that blind!
I just wanted you to know. I know you've been doubting yourself lately and wondering where you fit in. I believe in you. I've always believed in you.
Your friend,
Hermione
Harry traced the ink with his fingers with a smile. Bossy, difficult, know-it-all, yet always so considerate Hermione Granger always had something to say. Sometimes, when he stopped running away from what she was trying to tell him, he realised she had never stopped looking out for him. Ron simply supported him in shared interests and boyhood dreams. Hermione, on the other hand, wanted him to live up to his full potential—even if he couldn't always see for himself. Harry chuckled. No wonder Hedwig nipped him. He was of half a mind to nip himself for not appreciating what he had more.
Resolving to confront his personal demon called homework, he hugged the notebook to himself with a smile.
Tomorrow.
