A little bit of slash for Skies.
A/N: This takes place during the beginning of Reloaded, after the Nebuchennezer has returned to Zion.

We face each other. Your face is clouded in shadows, masking the myriad of thoughts racing across your face. I used to be able to read you; read your mannerisms, your body, your mind, all without being able to gaze upon your face. You were once an open book to me, as I was to you.
We were best friends once. Both of us, hotshot Captains of our own ships. Positive in our abilities and in each other. Then she came along.
Nothing was ever the same after we went to see her. They say the oracle tells you exactly hat you need to hear. I know you didn't like her news. She said that I would be he who found "the One".
I guess you knew even then, that the path she set me on was going to be the path that slowly separated us. As if you and I were standing on two different tectonic plates, watching them separate--slowly and steadily--and not being able to do anything but watch.
I became reckless and rash, fighting agents in the Matrix searching it obsessively for the One. You grew up, becoming more dependable and collected with every passing day. They council promoted you to Commander. I was very happy for you, but I knew then what you had always known. We could not remain together.
Sometimes, when I wake up in the middle of the night all alone, I wish that she had never appeared to us. I wish that she had never set in motion the acts that tore us part. But then I remember the prophecy. If they war could be over tomorrow, isn't that worth giving you up?
So now we're here. Separated by a slab of metal that might as well be an canyon a thousand miles wide. You sit behind your desk and struggle with the same thoughts I do. And you come to the same conclusion as I. We were never meant to be together, not like Neo and Trinity were made for each other. You were destined for a role very different from mine, as the oracle must have told you. We both rebelled for a time, but now, I think we both understand and accept what she had to tell us.
Lock. I fulfilled my destiny, as you have yours. Now say your worst.
