This is a 100 word challenge I wrote for myself. Enjoy!

As he watched the waves of German infantry climb out of their trenches, he almost felt sorry for them, for who wouldn't be sorry for the men who were still in their twenties, their lives written off as the cost of war? His thoughts on the life of the trench revolved around the conviction that he would be next, mowed down like those young Germans he witnessed just an hour ago. Then came the horrendous cry of agony, a cry that he knew all too well. He slipped on his gas-mask, relived that command had finally given him something useful.
