I didn't talk to Cat or Jade or the rest of the weekend. Even Monday morning, I still really didn't know how to handle the situation. I mean, Cat's sweet and wonderful and so easy to be with, but Jade is fiery, passionate, and ridiculously hot. However, she's also Beck's ex. I sigh, that's a really important aspect, he would never forgive me if I took her.
I know they broke up but I don't want to be that guy. I walk into school, a little later than usual, specifically trying to avoid everybody. "Rob," Rex looks up at me. "Dude, who cares who she was with? They're over, you tool."
I smile a little. Maybe Rex was right. Maybe I should be with Jade. "But what about Cat?" I ask.
"Pfft, she'll move on quickly. She's like a hummingbird onto some other guy next week. She'll be fine." Rex was never good at seeing how people get hurt but maybe he had a point. It was one of my least favorite things about Cat, she dated a lot of guys.
"So, I'll go for it then, I guess." Rex nods. "And I'll just hope Cat gets over it," I sigh.
"Yeah, dude. Jade's hot, go with that. Crazy hot," he mutters.
I don't want to face anyone yet, though, and I go and sit in Sikowitz's and wait for class to start. Everybody shows up and eventually Cat gets there. She looks at me, huffs, and goes to sit next to Tori on the other side of the class.
Sikowitz starts talking about the importance of props and Jade runs in late. "Sorry, Sikowitz. I really, really overslept." She tries her best to smooth down her hair and dewrinkle her skirt. She looks for a place to sit and looks between me and Cat. She sighs and sits in the middle of the classroom ignoring both of us.
Later, we meet up for lunch at the cafe. Me, Tori, and Andre are all sitting at a table. Beck went to Canada to see his cousin or to avoid Jade, probably both. Cat and Jade are nowhere to be seen yet.
Tori looks over to me, "Cat seemed really upset this morning, do you know what happened?"
I shake my head, not ready to explain the situation to anyone, "No, no, you know Cat and her moods."
Tori give me a weird look but doesn't say anything else.
Andre squirts some ketchup on his fries and looks up at us. "Where is Little Red anyway?"
"And the big bad wolf?" Tori laughs.
Andre looks over to me and I shake my head again. "I haven't seen them since this morning."
Tori cocks her head. "Don't you and Cat usually walk to 3rd period together because you're right next to each other?"
"Yeah," I nod my head slowly. "Just not today, I guess." I look down.
Tori starts to say something when Andre calls out, "Cat!" He waves her over to the table but she shakes her head and walks off with Trina.
Tori looks back over to me, "Did you do something? What's going on?"
"Tori," I look back at her. "I don't really want to talk about it."
"Well, I thought you guys were supposed to hang out Friday night. Did it happen then?" Andre asks.
"Nothing happened!" I slam my burrito container onto the table and get up.
"Robbie!" Tori calls out, but I ignore her and sit at a nearby table. I can feel her and Andre staring at me but I scroll through my phone instead.
I feel a tap on my shoulder and turn around. Jade smiles down at me, "Can I sit?"
I pat the seat next to me and she goes to it. "So we should talk, right?" she asks, in a far kinder voice than I've ever heard from her.
"Yeah," I sigh. "You start."
"Yeah, grunge," Rex lets out before I shove him into my backpack.
Jade widens her eyes but doesn't say anything on it. "So, we have feelings for each other apparently and we don't want to be together because of Cat, right?"
I nod, "And Beck. At the very least I feel like we owe them an explanation."
"Yeah, definitely Cat, but Beck left me crying in a broom closet," she frowns.
"It's not like he knew that happened," I try to defend him.
"He broke up with me out of the blue with no explanation. He knew I'd be sad."
I looked down, "He didn't say anything when he ended it?"
She glares at me, "No, just that he knew it was the right choice..." she trails off.
I cock my head, "Is there more?"
"Well, before that happened, I told him that we were going to run lines together sometime soon. And, he seemed weirdly jealous, and he's not the jealous type."
"Do you think he realized something was going on? I mean, we hang out a lot. Why would he act weird this time?" I question.
"I've been a lot nicer about you recently. For some reason, you just seem a lot more tolerable now, maybe it's the lack of Rex," she looks to my backpack.
"Oh," I smile a little. "So maybe he was trying to do a good thing. Breaking up with you so we could be together."
She shakes her head. "I guess that's possible. We should still probably tell him everything."
"I agree," I nod. "Oh my gosh," I say out of the blue.
"What?" Jade looks around.
I start standing up, "It's Cat. We have to go talk to her."
Jade follows me, "Let's go."
