Brackenfur stalked through the undergrowth. He drank in the scent of prey. It was a hot day in greenleaf, and Brackenfur was out catching prey and getting water for the elders. He had been punished for sneaking out at night and going to Fourtrees. He didn't mean any harm...but Firestar clearly didn't think that was the case. He had come back from Fourtrees a little after dawn, and Firestar was furious. He was supposed to be on the dawn patrol.
Mouse-brain! thought Brackenfur. I should have remembered that! Oh well, too late now.
He was very jumpy all day; when Ashfur went up to him to ask him if he was up for a hunting patrol, he whirled around and yowled out, "Intruder!" and made the whole clan leap into attack mode. The real reason he was going to Fourtrees and acting so edgy was the fact that he was receiving strange dreams. They were not from StarClan.
They were from Tigerstar.
Brackenfur only went to Fourtrees because he kept waking up the rest of the cats in the warriors den. He wished he could tell Firestar, but he would probably get angry at him. Anyway, the dreams Tigerstar sent him were warning him about some prophecy.
Why me? I'm no one special. Why not Brambleclaw? He's clan deputy. Plus, he was one of the cats who made the journey to the sun-drown place.
Brackenfur sighed as his mate, Sorreltail, padded up to him.
"Well what's the matter with you?" Sorreltail asked.
"..I don't know," Brackenfur replied. Then he hesitated. "Sorreltail, do you know how sometimes you want to say something but it makes you seem crazy?"
"Uh, kinda," said Sorreltail. "What's on your mind?"
Brackenfur sighed again. "Sorreltail, I'm...I'm having these dreams...but the dreams aren't from StarClan. They're coming from Tigerstar."
"What?! How?!"
"I really don't know how, or why. But he's telling me there is some danger in the forest and..I think he's serious."
Sorreltail stared at him, looking dumbfounded. He saw she was staring at something just beyond him. Brackenfur whirled around to see none other than Firestar.
"F-firestar!" he exclaimed. "How much did you hear? I can explai—,"
"Brackenfur! I have heard enough. Was there something more you wanted to share with me?"
"Well sort of," Brackenfur meowed guiltily.
"Well you might as well share it now," Firestar meowed.
Brackenfur explained to him the whole story. When he finished, Firestar looked at him thoughtfully.
"Strange..well tell me if it keeps happening, alright?"
"Yes, Firestar."
After Firestar padded away, Brackenfur went to the warriors den. On a lovely night like this, most cats were outside enjoying the evening, so the den was deserted. He curled up in the closest nest and eventually drifted off to sleep.
