Devon tried to think of a word to describe his situation. For a second, the word "Scary" popped up, but Devon just ignored it. He was not going to let this intimidate him. He looked out the back of the car and saw the familiar letters on the dirt road that spelled "District One."
He took a good long look. He was going to miss the town. Nobody liked him. He had some friends, but he knew that that they didn't like him. They just wanted his money. Well, really his Dad's money. The only things he would miss would be his Mom and his Mansion.
Oh, his father would be so proud if he won. Maybe he would stop telling him to "Man up and do something other than nothing". But Devon was certain this would be the last time he laid eyes on his town. "After all" he thought, remembering the Kings surprisingly cheerful tone, "There is one winner and eleven losers". He decided to give a "Don't mess up" speech as the cab drove past the District Two.
Priscilla looked out of the windshield. They had only been driving for two minutes and she already knew that she would enjoy competing against her district partner. Not only was he a snobby rich kid, he kept fidgeting in the car. She ignored it and called upon her Ninetails. She placed the Pokémon on her lap, where she pet and comforted it. She made sure to not touch it's cursed tails, though. Then she heard him lecturing his Monfernape, and her blood rose to a boil. Who on earth talks to their Pokémon like that."Alright you stupid primate" he whispered loud enough for her to hear, "You mess this up, and I will make you regret every moment of it, understand."
Now Priscilla wanted to give this royal brat a piece of her mind, but she couldn't bring herself to talk. This was her biggest weakness, and the reason she didn't have many friends back home. So instead she sighed and folded her arms as she heard Devon scold his Pokémon. It was going to be a very long trip.
The Poké Games parade had hit District 5. Matilda Schwartz was ushered into the amphitheater along with the rest of the district. She quickly scanned the place and spotted her best friend Zoey. She quickly sat next to her, taking the seat that a Goth kid was about to sit in. She quickly apologized and sat down. It seemed that half the population of district 5 was either Goth or emo. She was part of the endangered species called a "Normal human being" she often thought to herself. She was nervous, but not much. She knew that she would not be picked.
She and Zoey began to talk, and they drifted to the subject of when they first became friends, when she stopped a Mismagius from haunting Zoe's dreams. Now the pokemon was one of her favorites. Once the District was all underneath the tent the Capitol set up for them, the lights dimmed. Matilda heard the sounds of doors shutting and turned around to see the menacing muscle heads. One turned his head to look at her and Matilda quickly looked away.
She was surprised to see her younger sister, Adeline, running over to her from the row next to her. One of the gaurds began to protest, but Matilda's mom shot him a threatening look, and he backed down. "Good ol' mom" Matilda mused to herself. Some other buff guys came out of a Capitol truck with a tiny red satin curtain. Matilda got up and met her sister in the middle of the crowd. "I'm gonna be picked, I know it! Do you know how many gummy worms I buyed?" She began to cry, and many heads started turning. "Shhhh" Matilda said in a soothing tone. "I promise Addy, if you get picked," I will volunteer, okay?" Of course Matilda didn't think Adeline was going to be picked anyway. She sent her younger sister back to her seat and sat down.
Suddenly, a theatrical drumroll started, and the audience settled. "And now" an announcer said as the curtain drew back, "King Granola"
