I was in an angsty mood, and this was the first thing that popped into my head.

Warning: Spoilers for Zack's death.

Disclaimer: If I owned Final Fantasy, Zack wouldn't have died. However, since he did, I don't.

"I'll be… your living legacy."

He didn't know that those would be the last words he would ever say to him. He had still been disoriented from the mako, and the rain and darkness had only messed with his head further. He hadn't seen what had happened, but he had known that it was bad and that someone he cared about had left him behind. He had known that he needed to find that someone, and when the noises had stopped and the rain had started falling he had somehow managed to make his body start crawling.

He had seen the blood first. It would've been hard not to, not with the way that the rain had made it seem like so much more was there. He just hadn't expected it to still be so red, and the closer he had gotten to the edge of the cliff the redder the blood had gotten. There had been a body at the edge of the cliff too, surrounded by the red blood and lying so still. It hadn't been until he had managed to crawl right up next to it that the body had seemed so familiar, and he had said the name that had been in the tip of his tongue even though he hadn't known it.

He had moved, then, struggling through the haze of death and uttering words that hadn't made it into complete sentences. He had been pulled down against a barely moving chest, the arm that had done so falling away a moment later and allowing him to rise up again with more of the red blood smeared across his face. He had said more, and had grabbed the sword that had been to his side, and when he had placed into his hands all of his strength and conviction had went into his parting words. And he had repeated them, somehow knowing that that was what he needed to do.

Cloud didn't know that it would be the last time he would speak to Zack.
