A tall, thin woman curled up onto the couch. She reached up and pulled her sleek black hair into a bun on top of her head. She smiled, seeing the young man cross the room and plop down next to her. She leaned against him and sighed.
"Lin... can I ask you something?"
Lin's eye brows furrowed as she straightened up.
"Sure Tenzin." Tenzin turned to face her, putting his back against the seat arm-rest. Lin mirrored him with a small smile on her face, and slid her fingers in-between his.
"What do you think about kids?" He asked hesitantly.
"Kids?" Lin bit her lip. "They're great." Lin felt her heart thudding in her chest. Why was he talking about kids all of a sudden? Lin decided to change the subject. "Have you seen Honora's son? He's adorable. He's a firebender and he looks just like Firelord Zuko. And-"
"I'm not talking about other people's kids Lin." Tenzin said solemnly. He pulled his hand away from her's and set it onto his lap. Lin felt her heart crumbling inside her.
"Then what are you talking about?" She asked innocently although she knew the answer.
"Would you ever... you know... want kids?"
"Honestly Tenzin... I don't know."
The two sat in silence for several agonizing minutes.
Lin broke the silence. "Tenzin, I know having children is very important to you... Its just not something that I've thought about that much." Lin squeezed her eyes shut. Her mother would curse her for lying like this. Toph had passed down her sixth sense to feel vibrations, and Lin was sensing Tenzin was getting irritated with her.
The truth is Lin had thought about it a lot. She had thought about it almost everyday since she'd met Tenzin. But the truth was that she didn't want them. The truth was that she couldn't.
"It is very important to me. I am the last airbender... If I do not have children...then..."
"Then there will be no more left." Lin finished his sentence hoarsely. Lin opened her eyes to see Tenzin staring at her.
Lin's eyes filled with tears, and her face tensed. She felt Tenzin tense too, and reach for her hand. She tugged it away and crossed her arms.
"Lin I'm sorry for bringing it up... I didn't mean to upset you..."
Lin felt tears stream down her cheeks, but she couldn't handle it. She pushed off the side of the chair and wrapped her arms around Tenzin and buried her face in his robes.
"I can't have children Tenzin. I don't want to take that away from you... but I just love you so much..." Violent sobs overtook her body and she shook in anger and fear of losing him. "Please don't leave me..." She whispered.
She felt his reach around her and pull her up to face him. He slid his hands under her chin and leaned forward until their noses touched. Lin forced her gaze into his eyes and let his heartbeat pulse through her chest.
"Don't worry Lin... I'm not leaving."
Lin rested her forehead on his and whispered, "Promise me..."
She felt him hesitate, and her heart broke into shards of glass as she felt him lie.
"I promise."
