What Mattered

Giselle skipped through the woods outside her cottage, several of her woodland friends behind her. A song was in the air, and all were singing quite merrily about castles and true love when Pip piped up.

"Are you really going to marry a prince, Giselle?" His eyebrow was raised and his hands rested on his hips. "Really?"

The young girl dropped her skirts and twirled towards him. "Of course Pip! He's out there somewhere." Her face grew dreamy. "My true love is waiting for me."

Pip tapped his foot against the log he was standing on, "Are you sure he's a prince, Giselle? How do you know he is a prince?" His face screwed upwards. "What if he's a duke instead or even a viscount?"

Giselle laughed, clasping her little hands together. "Pip, you're so silly! Of course my true love is a prince – I'm perfect princess material – living alone in the woods save my dear friends, singing all day, and being as helpful as I can." She beamed a brilliant smile, revealing several missing front teeth. "I just have to wait until my prince comes and saves me from whatever dark thing comes."

She spun, lost in her fantasy. "And then he'll carry me off to his castle where we'll be married. And I'll be princess though that doesn't really matter as I'll be with my true love forever and ever…"

Many years later, Giselle found herself not in a castle but in an apartment, and no crown in sight.

But that didn't matter to her – because even though he wasn't a prince in most eyes, he was her prince.

And that was all that mattered.
