Percy walked up to the steps of Professor Chiron's Academy, but this wasn't a normal school. A couple of years ago it had been made public knowledge that demigods existed. Demigods are the children of the ancient greek and roman gods and humans. These children possessed great power, so naturally the government wanted to use them as weapons. In order to keep a close eye on them, the government quickly set up a school to train the demigods in battle and espionage, and this was Percy Jackson's first day.

Percy looked at his student handbook that had instructions on what to do on the first day. The orientation and magical item assignment was taking place in the main gym. The only problem was that he couldn't find the gym. He had already gone around the school twice and still couldnt find anyone else. He was about to give up hope until he heard someone talking.

"Why did I get assigned perimeter duty? Its not like anyone going to be out here on the first day anyway." Grover grumbled.

"Hey you!" Percy shouted. Grover looked over to see Percy running at him.

"What are you doing out here? You should be at the orientation." Grover shouted back.

"Sorry, but I couldn't find the gym. Could you show me?

"Sure. Thats what im here for." Grover answered. "Its apparently all im here for." He added quietly.

"You mean that they hired you just to escort students around?" Percy asked confused.

"Well no, but my boss always gives me crap assignments. The satyrs are supposed to be here to help the students in any way." Gover answered. "Anyway, orientation's almost over and if we don't hurry, you'll end up getting a lame magic item."

"How does the magical item assignment work anyway? Do they test us and give us an item that suits our skills?" Percy asked as they jogged to the gym.

"No they just lay the items out on a tables and then its a free-for-all."

"No way! When does it start?"

"Well if they have stuck to the schedule, it should be going on now."

"What!" Percy shouted. "We need to hurry!" He grabbed Grover's hand and sprinted towards the gym. "By the way, I'm Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon."

"Im Grover, the satyr."

By the time that Percy got to the gym, it was too late. All the tables had been picked over. A couple of other students were scouring the tables, desperately trying to find something good. Percy started to walk up and down the isles. He saw a hat that could let you speak spanish. While cool, there were very few possibilities where that could be helpful. On another table he saw a lipstick that, when worn, allowed you to talk to fish. There were two reasons that he was not going to chose that. One, he wasn't a lipstick wearing kind of guy, and two, he could already talk to fish because he was the son of Poseidon. As he passed the magical weapons table, something caught his eyes. There was nothing on the surface of the table, but under he saw a pen. He picked it up and looked at the description card attached to it.

"Riptide" He heard someone say, but when he turned to look no one was there.
