A hatter, a hare, and a dormouse were having high tea.
That is quite impossible, one would interrupt. But is is not impossible, only improbable that you would happen upon it happening; and so as it was, a hatter, a hare, and a dormouse were having high tea.
"What's the matter, Hatter?" the Dormouse inquired. "You seem remarkably forlorn, and being so, I might remark upon it."
"Yes, noticeably put-out, as I noticed," the Hare added.
"I don't know," the Hatter sighed. "Something I expected to happen hasn't happened yet."
"Might I inquire as to the object of your impatient expectation?"
"That's what I would like to know, myself," replied the Hatter, stirring his cold cup of tea. "I am expecting something will happen, but I cannot fathom what to expect."
"Even if you expect nothing will happen, something is bound to happen."
The Hatter set down his neglected cup for a new one. "Well, that something could bother to happen sooner. It's rather rude to leave people expecting. Their tea will go cold."
"Cold tea!" gasped the Hare. "Move down, move down, move down!"
The three immediately changed chairs, knocking empty saucers aside and showering cake crumbs on the tablecloth.
Once settled, the Dormouse again turned to the Hatter.
"So what should we expect?"
The Hare frowned. "We're expecting someone? Why didn't you tell me earlier? I would have set another place!"
"Not a who, a what."
"It could be a who, I don't know what to expect," the Hatter said.
"If we were expecting a who, who should we expect?"
All three were silent.
"What day is today?" asked the Hatter.
"Gribling," replied the Dormouse.
The name hung in the air for a moment, heavy as the steam billowing from the spouts of the teapots.
"Then we all know who to expect, I expect," the Hatter announced.
"Yes. We merely have to wait and see if our expectations are correct."
The Hare shook his head and angrily slammed his fists on the table, knocking over a pitcher of cream.
"Whoever she is, our who is very rude. She's late for tea!"
"Just be patient," the Dormouse assured her companions. "Someone is bound to arrive."
"Today is Gribling," added the Hare.
"Something is bound to happen," finished the Hatter, and with that, all three resumed high tea.
