Rutheran Burgesse has always been a shy child who loved to sing. Her family is found guilty of great treachery to the Rethwellan Crown. Rutheran, being only seven, is spared the King's wrath and punishment. However, no one will take Ruthe in because they fear she will grow up to be like the rest of her family. The Rethwellan King contacts his brother Daren, the Co-Consort of Valdemar and asks if he will sponsor Ruthe at the Collegium. Daren agrees under two conditions: Rutheran will be watched over by the Companions, and if she begins to develop any Gift or magic, Ruthe will remain in Valdemar. This is the story of Rutheran Burgesse, the daughter of a Rethwellan noble, and her transformation into a common, yet talented Bard.
