I would like to have warm food—

He remembered his father's drunken rage.

—to tide us over this holiday season because mum can only buy cabbage, for father to stop—

He shivered in the bitter cold, drawing his threadbare cloak around his shoulders.

—wasting his coins on ale, and for a book—

The nib was growing dull and he hesitated.

—to read at night. Please make my mum smile more often, too.

He heard the door bang open with his father's arrival and quickly shoved the parchment beneath the floorboards.
