"The Ancients' Chronicles?" Anya asked slowly. "How much money are you willing to pay?"
Daniel gulped. The saleswoman had been looking at him like he was a fat, juicy steak ever since he walked in. "How much are they?"
She rolled her eyes; no one bartered like they used to in the old days when she could haggle the price up without her customer realizing it. She liked capitalism, she truly did. But the thrill that she'd once gotten out of the experience wasn't there anymore. "Two thousand dollars sounds orgasmic to me."
Now the archeologist felt nauseous. He was positive that he needed these books to find the missing pieces of the puzzle. What he didn't know was how he was going to pay for them. Then it clicked. "One thousand."
"One thousand, seven hundred."
"Nine hundred."
"One thousand, six hundred."
"Eight hundred."
Anya had to admire the man in front of her. Once he understood what she was doing, he'd picked up faster than she'd expected. He was quite good at it too. That did not, however, mean that she was going to lose money because of him. "One thousand, five hundred and not a cent less."
"One thousand, four hundred," Daniel countered. "You know as well as I do that there can't be that large of a market for these books."
"This is still a capitalistic society," Anya whined as she started to package up the chronicles. "Now that you've bought them, are you going to give them as a Christmas present?"
"I knew I'd forgotten something," he groaned. "How many more days do I have to shop?"
"You have four more days to invest in our economy," she chirped. "Have a merry Christmas and have lots of orgasms."
"You too," he said faintly. At least he still had four days to buy presents…But he was not coming back to this place unless it was absolutely necessary.
