COMFORTING OLIVIA

AUTHOR'S NOTES: Remember the part in my GMD sequel, where Olivia has a nightmare & Basil comforts her? This is a revised version of the scene, told through Basil's eyes.

I know I have made him seem like a "Lolita-lover" before, but trust me, that was not the intended effect.

Hopefully, this story will clear everything up. If not, well, can't say I didn't try.

As I slept in my bed on that warm August evening, so many dreams were running through my sleep-drugged mind. Dreams of happiness, dreams of joy, dreams of my new life with my new family...

"Basil? Basil?" A familiar voice woke me up from my merry trance. I turned about in my bed to see little Olivia Flaversham, in her nightgown, staring at me with pain-filled eyes. "What is it, my sweetling?" I managed to reply through a yawn.

"I can't sleep. Can I sleep with you?"

I was a little apprehensive about Olivia's request. The thought of her in bed with me was enough to make me moan in disgust (much less her father), but I didn't want to turn her away, either. Showing my consent, I made room for her in my bed, & she crawled under the covers, cuddling close to me. Gently patting her hair & face, I whispered softly, "Now, tell me why you can't sleep."

"Well, I had a scary dream, & I was in it. These horrible brutes were after me with knives, & they stabbed me! It was so horrible," Olivia finally sobbed.

I was immediately struck with pity for the poor girl, as she cried into my robe. Here I was, sleeping peacefully, & Olivia was wracked with terrifying dreams! It was enough to make my heart bleed...

"Olivia, please don't cry, love! Everything will be all right," I whispered compassionately as I rocked the girl gingerly in my arms, trying desperately to calm her, to help her dry her tears. I kissed Olivia on her temple & forehead, gently patting her paws as I said, "Olivia, you're safe with me, & nothing can hurt you. I promise, you'll be quite all right."

Still the girl continued to sob. All I could do was continue to hold her in my swaying arms & sweetly caress her as I clasped her to my chest & sang a soft lullaby. In a matter of moments, Olivia fell fast asleep, & her tears ceased, as a smile played across her face.

Gently taking the girl & tucking her in beside me, I continued to cuddle the girl, vowing to protect her, no matter what. After all, it was now my duty to watch over my little angel. And it would be a duty I would continue to hold throughout the years...one I would hold with pride.
