[Summary: ] Clare graduated high school 6 years ago. It's been 6 years to the day since she saw Eli Goldsworthy. He left her days later to go to college in the UK. She'd since graduated university and started working with a publishing company. She hasn't dated anyone, or looked at anyone. Her eye and heart was set for the Goth boy who stole her heart in Advanced English.
[Author's Note: ] I was inspired to write this story by Kathrine1997 with her So Much For My Happy Ending... But I did NOT take the idea from her. It is very similar, but it won't be the exact same. It's all written in Adam's POV. Ummmmmmm, I hope you enjoy?
If you could see what you did to her.
I sat in her visitor's waiting area, waiting, there was someone before me to see her. The glass walls of her office made it hard for her to be her private self. Alli, who she hired to be her assistant and receptionist, was filing her nails talking to Jenna, who was in Hollywood singing songs about Degrassi. Six years did a lot to us. There was only one person missing to make the picture complete. Him. There he was... Wait.. There he was? Standing at her door? Alli shrugged when I gave her an evil look. Clare wouldn't be able to handle this. Not after all these years. I watched the glass walls as he took a seat in her client chair. She blushed 10 different shades of pink and red. "Alli, tell her she has to go see Mr. Mason, we have to get her out of there before it's too late. She can't cave on him that fast." I watched Clare as Alli did her intercom thing. Her face turned to her computer screen, only me and Alli knew what was on her desktop. She jumped when Alli's voice boomed in her office, "Clare, Mr. Mason, Now!"
She told the visitor she'd be back right away as she left the office. "You don't have to se Mr. Mason. I just need to set him straight about something, okay?" Clare's head bobbed as I passed her, entering her office. "Oh, that was fast, now what I wanted to ask you," Eli never turned around to talk. I took Clare's seat behind her desk, giving him an evil eye. He looked at me in confusion. I admit, I look different, but I don't look all that different. My own best friend should have recognized me. Looking passed the person who abandoned Clare and I in this city, I noticed Clare looking. I shook my head, telling her it's okay for her to go on a break. Looking back to the foreign person in front of me, I opened my mouth to speak.
"She's living in the past, Eli, she hasn't had a boyfriend. Nobody looks at her. Alli, Jenna and me, we're all she's had these past six years! Her mom left, her dad left! Darcy's still in Kenya! And the boy she loved left for the UK and never came back." Clare and Alli were both gone from the waiting area, and I let out a sigh of relief, turning the desktop around so he could see. "She looks at this everyday and tries so hard not to cry, Eli. She started writing a novel about a boy and a girl who were complete opposites who fell in love but the boy runs away and never comes home, and she ends up committing suicide. In the end of the novel, the boy returns to find the girl he loved isn't waiting, and it's all his fault. Do you know how many times she's admitted she wants to die because you aren't here to save her!" Tears were stinging my eyes, threatening to fall, but he needed to know he torn her heart out, and ripped it to tiny little pieces. "She wrote it about you. Every detail of the boy, it's you. Everything she says in each chapter reminds her of the two years you were together. There's dialogue that I remember the two of you saying quite vividly.
"You left her stranded and alone. She never stopped loving you. And if you think walking into her office after six years is going to be okay, you're wrong, Mr. Goldsworthy. I'm not going to let you hurt my best friend again! She's too fragile and vulnerable for your bullshit! She's finally in a place where she's somewhat happy. Jenna flies us to Los Angeles for Christmas every year! That's a friend. Alli walks in here everyday and WORKS for Clare, and never wants the pay check, she just wants to be with her best friend. I come in everyday, and take her to lunch. We're her friends. You? You don't even recognize us. Couldn't if you tried." I was finally out of things to say. At some point in my rant, I must have stood to tower above him. I took my seat and waited for a reply.
"She really wants to die?" That's all he could push out. His emerald eyes were swollen with unshed tears. "Yeah, and if it wasn't for Alli, Jenna and myself, she probably would be dead." A single tear bolted down his cheek. "I came here to tell her I still love her, and I wanted to ask her something..." His voice trailed off as he reached into his pocket, pulling out a small black velvet box. "I know six years is a long time to wait for someone, but I'm here now, and I'm not leaving." I turned one picture around on Clare's desk, showing Eli what he really left behind. In the frame was a picture of a child, no older then two when the picture was taken. I took 3 more frames down from the shelving behind the desk. These pictures were clearly missed by Eli. "She just turned five not that long ago. She doesn't know her daddy. Asked once, but her mommy broke down in tears, she never asked mommy again. She's seen pictures of him, knows his name. But she doesn't think he'll ever come home. I spent six years helping Clare raise a child who looks exactly like you. She wakes up everyday and is reminded that you left her, and your child to fend for themselves. Her name is Errin Marie Goldsworthy. Born March 20th. I'm picking her up from school in 3 hours. If you want to meet your daughter, you'll join me."
Having said what I said, I left the glass room in time for Clare and Alli to return. I gave Clare a kiss on the cheek, "I'll be back in an hour to pick you up for lunch, you have to tell me everything." I gave Alli a quick hug before making my way around a corner. I stopped, turned around, and watched my best friend's dream come true. I watched as Eli took Clare's hand and explain everything to her. I watched as he took a knee and pulled out the velvet box. I watched as Alli started crying in the middle of the office. I watched Clare nod her head up and down, tears flowing from her eyes. A smile scratched its way to my lips. The misfits were back, and hopefully for good.
Eli sat in the passenger seat of my blue 2008 Chevy Malibu waiting impatiently. "When does she get out?" The clock only read 2:55. "She has five more minutes. I have to get in there to claim her. You are to wait in here, don't touch anything. Not even the radio!" His fingers started twiddling as I opened my door. Climbing out I saw a bit of worry in his eyes, "Don't worry, Err will love you like you've always been around, she doesn't hold grudges like Clare."
Inside the building, I waited in the hall for Errin's class to be dismissed. When the door swung open, children were running to their parents, clinging on for dear life. "Uncle Adam!" Her high pitched voice grew closer and closer until her arms were latched around my legs. "Did you have fun today Errin?" She nodded her dark curls, her hazel eyes meeting my blue as I picked her up. "That's wonderful. I have a surprise for you!" Her eyes grew in anticipation. "It's in the car waiting, any guesses?" She brought her index finger to her mouth, thinking, as we walked out of the school towards my car. "A puppy?" She questioned with excitement in her voice. "Maybe.." She had the same smirk as Eli, though she'd never seen it before. I walked around the rear of the vehicle, opening her door behind mine, and she crawled into her car seat. "Who is that, Uncle?" She was looking at the passenger seat at the dark haired man. "And where is this surprise?" I let out a little laugh, poking her nose gently, causing her to giggle. "That is your surprise. What do you say we get you to mommy?" She sighed in defeat, pulling her arms and legs close to herself so they don't get caught in the door as I close it. After jumping into the driver's seat, I turn to Eli while buckling up, "Eli Goldworthy, meet your daughter, Errin." I look into the rearview mirror to see her eyes get big and her jaw drop when Eli turns around to say hello.
