Chapter 1: September 2015
"I've missed you," Victoire muttered in between kisses.
Teddy laughed. "We saw each other three days ago," he said.
Victoire sighed in happiness as Teddy kissed her again. "Three days is too long," she said against his lips.
"I agree," Teddy replied, pulling Victoire closer.
Spending the summer apart had been torturous for Victoire. After months of being able to see Teddy on a daily basis, the long stretches of time between visits with him over the summer had felt like centuries. Of course, Victoire could understand why her parents wouldn't let her have Teddy over every day, or why she couldn't go and visit him all the time. But just because she understood didn't mean she had to like it.
Her parents had been surprisingly happy when Victoire and Teddy had told them the news. Victoire didn't know why she'd been so nervous – Teddy was a great guy and her parents both knew that. They'd waited and only spoken to Bill and Fleur once the four of them could be alone. Even though Dominique already knew about their relationship, Victoire didn't want Louis to know just yet – he would only blab to the younger cousins, and then the whole family would know in a matter of hours. Bill and Fleur had agreed to support Teddy and Victoire's desire not to advertise their relationship to the rest of the Weasleys, though they assured them both that when the time came, the rest of their family would be just as happy.
"We need to stop," Teddy muttered then, pulling away slightly.
Victoire pouted. "Just a little longer," she pleaded. "We haven't kissed properly in ages."
It was true. Once the secret of their relationship had been divulged to Victoire's parents, both Bill and Fleur had insisted that the couple spend their free time over the summer under adult supervision. While they'd managed to steal a few private moments, there had always been the risk of being caught.
"I can't be late to the prefect's meeting," Teddy insisted, even while going back in for another kiss. "I'm Head Boy."
"The meeting can't start without you," Victoire pointed out. "And how can you be late if the meeting hasn't started?"
Teddy groaned as Victoire pulled him down and kissed him thoroughly, not parting until they both needed to take a breath.
"Okay," Teddy said, taking a step back in order to clear his head. "Seriously Vic, we have to go. Don't you want to make a good first impression? I'm not the only one there who's going to be evaluating you. As Head Girl, technically Marina is in charge of the female prefects."
Victoire sighed, knowing that their moment was now over. "Alright," she agreed, straightening her clothes so she wouldn't look like she'd just been making out in a train compartment. She looked down and fixed her gleaming prefect's badge so that it was straight and rubbed a spot of dust away. "Do I look okay?" she asked.
"You look beautiful," Teddy smiled, kissing Victoire on the forehead to protect them both from getting carried away again. "Come on, we'd better get going. The train's going to be leaving soon anyway."
As Victoire raised the blinds and opened the compartment door, Teddy fixed his own clothes, making sure that he looked smart enough for being Head Boy. That done, the two stepped out into the hallway and began to make their way towards the front of the train where the prefects always met at eleven o'clock on September the first.
When they arrived in the large compartment, they reluctantly parted, Teddy moving to sit next to Marina and confer about Head Boy/Girl business and Victoire taking a seat next to Jonathon Cadwallader, the male fifth year Gryffindor prefect.
A few prefects were still missing, and Teddy and Marina waited until everyone had arrived to start the meeting.
"Alright," Teddy finally said once everyone was settled. "Welcome everyone to another year. And a special welcome to our brand new fifth year prefects, congratulations on being selected."
Teddy surreptitiously winked at Victoire and she couldn't help but smile.
"So instead of going over the rules verbally, Marina is going to pass around prefect's manuals to everyone – yes even those of you in sixth and seventh year, because there are some changes and additions to the rules this year. We ask that you all please use this afternoon to familiarize yourself with the rules and guidelines so that you'll be ready to start your duties as of tonight," Teddy said.
Victoire took a manual, noting that it was quite heavier than she might have expected. She wondered if she could convince Teddy to give her the quick version of the rules so she wouldn't have to read the whole thing.
"We're just going to go over a few things right now though," Marina continued. "For those of you who already know this, just bear with us for a bit. Now, as prefects, you are responsible for keeping order in the school. There are a finite number of faculty members, and they need their rest too, so they can't be everywhere all the time. Even when you're not on duty, you are always a prefect, so if you see something going on that shouldn't be, it's your responsibility to step in and deal with the situation."
"Right," Teddy agreed. "Protocols for just about any situation you could encounter will be found in your manuals, so we won't waste time going over that."
"Also, remember that you are always to wear your prefect's badge while at Hogwarts," Marina added. "It will identify you to students who need help in whatever fashion. This is especially important in the first few weeks of school, because there are going to be a lot of very lost first years."
"Speaking of," Teddy jumped in. "You are all permitted to be twenty minutes late to your lessons for the first two weeks of classes, as long as it's because you're helping someone to find their way. Please be responsible about this and don't use it as an excuse to be late."
"Now, as for your official responsibilities," Marina declared. "As I'm sure you're all aware, the main job of the prefects it to conduct patrols in the hours directly following curfew, to make sure that everyone is in their respective dorms."
"Patrols are always done in pairs," Teddy said. "And there are three patrol routes through the castle, which means that on average, you will be patrolling every four nights or so."
Victoire knew this all already of course, because Teddy had been a prefect for the past two years. The rest of the fifth years though were listening in rapt attention.
"Excuse me?" Barbara Mitchell, the fifth year female Ravenclaw prefect raised her hand. "Will we be assigned specific partners for patrols, or do we get to pick who we patrol with?"
"I was just getting to that," Marina said. "Patrols and patrol partners will be scheduled by Teddy and I. However, we do assign the patrol pairs on a rotating basis, so you'll probably end up patrolling with each of your fellow prefects at least once, if not more, throughout the year."
"Also, in order to train our new prefects, Marina and I have decided that for the first month or so of the year, all fifth year prefects will be paired with a seventh year prefect, who can show them the ropes," Teddy added.
Victoire met Teddy's eye and smiled. Despite the fact that she knew both she and Teddy would be doing patrols, it hadn't occurred to her until now that she could be conducting her patrols with Teddy. She'd thought she'd be patrolling with other fifth years.
"Patrol schedules will always be available two weeks in advance at a minimum," Marina added. "The first month has already been scheduled and can be found inside your manuals."
"When we update the schedule, it will be posted in the prefect's lounge," Teddy added. "Instructions on how to get into the prefect's lounge, and also the prefect's bathroom, are in your manual as well."
"Prefect's meetings will be held once every two weeks in the prefect's lounge," Marina continued. "The first one will be next week, Friday immediately following last period, and then they will be every other Friday afternoon following that."
"Friday, seriously?" Eli Bowman, one of the fifth year Slytherin prefects groaned.
"We believe that it will be more beneficial to meet immediately prior to the weekend rather than after," Marina declared.
"Is that it then?" one of the seventh year prefects asked.
Teddy and Marina exchanged a look and then Teddy nodded. "I suppose it is."
"Please read your manuals in full, and don't be late to your patrols. All the information you need is in the manuals and if there are any questions, don't hesitate to ask either Teddy or myself," Marina concluded.
Victoire let the rest of the prefects exit the compartment before her as she waited for Teddy, who was conferring with Marina again.
"Victoire, you coming?" Jonathon asked as he reached the compartment door.
"Yeah," Victoire nodded. "I just wanted to ask Teddy and Marina a question before I do."
"Alright," Jonathon nodded, walking out into the hall and letting the door close behind him.
Victoire waited awkwardly while Marina and Teddy finished their conversation.
"So we're good then," she heard Marina say. "I'll speak to Professor Longbottom when we get to the castle and make sure we're all on the same page."
"Great," Teddy nodded.
He and Marina turned and Marina suddenly realized that Victoire was still there.
"Oh, I'm sorry Victoire," she said. "Did you need something?"
"Oh," Victoire said, trying to think of a question she could ask. "I was just wondering – "
"I'll take this one Marina," Teddy offered. "You go on."
"Alright," Marina nodded, heading to the compartment door. "See you both later."
As soon as the compartment door had closed behind the Head Girl, Teddy closed the distance between him and his girlfriend and pressed a swift kiss to Victoire's lips.
"So," he said, taking a step back. "What did you think?"
"Of the meeting?" Victoire asked.
"Yeah," Teddy nodded. "Did I do alright?"
"You did just fine," Victoire smiled. "You're going to make a fantastic Head Boy."
"I knew you'd say that," Teddy smirked.
Victoire kissed him again and then pulled him down to sit next to her on the bench.
"So," she said slowly. "Who am I going to be patrolling with this week?"
Teddy gestured to her prefect's manual. "Why don't you look inside and see?"
Playing along, Victoire flipped open her manual and began to scan through the pages, looking for the patrol schedule.
"It's at the back," Teddy informed her, helping her to flip to the correct page.
Victoire quickly scanned the document. It wasn't hard to find her name, and right above it, Teddy's.
"Looks like we're going to be patrolling together," Victoire said, gleefully happy.
"Yup," Teddy agreed. "Marina tried to pair me with the fifth year girl from Slytherin, but I wasn't having it."
"I would think not," Victoire agreed in mock-seriousness. "Who was I paired with originally?"
"Oh, that doesn't matter," Teddy muttered.
Victoire frowned. "Not Beverly Longman?"
Teddy made a face and nodded. "But don't worry, see? I've worked it out."
"I don't know if I could ever patrol with her," Victoire said.
"Well then I'll just have to make sure that doesn't happen," Teddy smiled.
Victoire tossed the manual aside and reached her arms up to pull Teddy's face towards hers. "You really are the best boyfriend," she said, pressing her lips against his.
"I try," Teddy smiled.

Soon, Victoire and Teddy agreed that they should go and find their friends, lest they think they'd abandoned them. Kara, Brianna, and Billy were glad to see them, and even presented them each with a sandwich from the healthy food trolley, which Brianna had apparently insisted everyone eat from.
The train ride was spent with much laughter, and before they knew it they had arrived at Hogsmeade station. As Victoire could have predicted, Teddy had refused to summarize the prefect's manual for her, and so she had spent a great deal of the afternoon reading it. The result was that she now felt very ready to tackle her new responsibilities.
"Here we go," Victoire said, making sure her pin was straight before descending the train with Teddy. As prefects, they had to make sure the first years all found their way to the boats with Hagrid, and that nobody lingered on the train or the platform. The fifth years were to be stationed at the exits to the train to help students get down onto the platform and to direct the traffic, so Victoire chose a door and waited for the inevitable onslaught of students all excited to get up to the feast. Meanwhile, Teddy went to make sure the carriages were ready to go and to oversee the boarding of the carriages.
Surprisingly, it didn't take long for everyone to disembark from the train. Since it was the job of a couple of sixth years to inspect the train for stragglers, once the slew of students exiting the train had stopped, Victoire's job was done and she joined Teddy at the carriages.
When they reached the Great Hall, Teddy and Victoire joined their friends at the Gryffindor Table. Victoire watched excitedly as her brother entered the Hall with his fellow first years, smiling when he caught her eye.
"Look at him," Victoire said, nudging Teddy to her right. "My baby brother, all grown up and starting school."
The sorting didn't take long, and Louis was easily sorted into Gryffindor, just like all the Weasleys. Victoire wasn't surprised in the least to have her brother join her house.
After the feast was over, Victoire met up with Jonathon Cadwallader to escort the first years up to the common room. She invited Teddy to come along, but he said something about having to check in with Marina about something first and that he would meet her up in the common room.
"Hey Victoire," Louis said, coming up with the other first years. "Are you going to show me where the common room is?"
"I sure am," Victoire nodded. "Is this all the first years?"
"Looks like it," Jonathon nodded. "Yup, I've counted them all, we're good to go."
"Great," Victoire smiled. "First years, follow us!"
Louis reached over and grabbed Victoire's hand and her heart almost melted at the affectionate touch. He baby brother might be eleven and starting school now, but he was still her baby brother.
"Come on then," she said, pulling Louis along and leading the first years up to the Grand Staircase. Jonathon brought up the rear, ensuring that nobody got lost in the back of the group.
When they reached the Grand Staircase, Victoire was surprised by the awe on the first years' faces, particularly on Louis' face. She'd forgotten how wondrous this castle had seemed to her when she was a first year and she was glad that she got to see the feeling in the first years.
Soon, they reached the common room, where Jonathon directed them to their respective dormitories.
"And you'll want to get to bed pretty soon tonight," Victoire added. "It's going to be an early morning tomorrow and you want to be well-rested." This was the line Teddy had told her to use to ensure that the first years cleared out before the upperclassman party without outright kicking them out. It worked well enough, the first years all eagerly going up to check out the new dorms, leaving the common room almost empty.
"Victoire?" Louis asked, lingering next to his sister. "Do I have to go up there alone?"
"You won't be alone," Victoire frowned. "All your dorm mates will be with you."
"Yeah," Louis agreed. "But they're all strangers. Can't I stay with you or Dominique?"
"I'm afraid not," Victoire shook her head. "Boys aren't allowed in the girl's dormitories. But you'll be fine, and I'll see you in the morning."
"Alright," Louis sighed, letting go of Victoire's hand and slowly climbing the stairs to his new dorm. "Goodnight Vic," he called out.
"Goodnight Louis," Victoire called back. She smiled as he disappeared from sight. Louis was just nervous. He'd adapt soon enough.

It wasn't long before the rest of the house began to arrive, the underclassmen heading straight for their dorms, knowing the drill, while the upperclassmen claimed the common room.
"I can't believe we finally get to stay down for the party!" Brianna exclaimed excitedly when she and Kara arrived in the common room.
"Yeah," Victoire nodded. "Should be fun!"
Teddy arrived not to long after, Billy and his girlfriend Kayla in tow. Apparently Teddy had caught them loitering in the hall and had practically had to drag them back to Gryffindor Tower.
"Almost ready?" Teddy asked Victoire. Their first patrol was scheduled for that evening, and it was almost curfew.
"Whenever you are," Victoire replied.
"Wait, where do you think you're going?" Brianna demanded. "You can't just leave! This is our first upperclassman party!"
"We've got patrols," Victoire shrugged apologetically. "But we'll be back in plenty of time to enjoy the party."
Brianna shook her head. "Is this how it's going to be now?" she demanded. "You always spoiling the fun with your 'prefect duties'?"
"Maybe," Victoire replied good naturedly. She wasn't going to play into Brianna's game tonight. Tonight, she was happy. She was a prefect, she was back with Teddy, she was at school with her friends again, and there was a great party waiting for her when she finished her rounds.
"C'mon," Teddy said, leading Victoire out of the common room. "The sooner we start, the sooner we're finished."
Victoire let Teddy lead her down to the prefect's lounge, which was the meeting point for all the patrols. In addition to Teddy and Victoire, Kurt Robins and Scott Warner (sixth year prefects in Gryffindor and Hufflepuff respectively) were patrolling, as well as Pamela Higgins, a Hufflepuff seventh year, with Hillary Davis, a Slytherin fifth year.
The rounds were divided by floor – one team patrolled on the fifth, sixth, and seventh floors, another patrolled the second, third, and fourth floors, and a final team took the first floor, basement, and dungeons. Pamela and Hillary agreed to take the dungeon route, and Kurt and Scott volunteered for the second through fourth floors, leaving the top floors to Teddy and Victoire.
Teddy handed out checklists to each patrol team, listing all the rooms they were required to check and the route they were meant to take to compete the patrols.
"When you've finished your rounds," Teddy said, "return the checklist to this table right here," he gestured to a table on the side of the room, "with all your notes on it. No matter what sort of encounter you have with a student, everything gets reported, understood?"
Everyone nodded and they set out. Since the prefect's lounge was on the fourth floor, Victoire and Teddy only had to climb one floor before starting their patrols.
"So we just… walk around?" Victoire asked as they started down one hallway.
"Most of the time, yes," Teddy agreed. "Most students are pretty good about keeping curfew. We probably won't run into anyone tonight – the underclassmen are asleep and the upperclassmen are celebrating."
"You mean the upperclassmen have parties in all the houses?" Victoire asked in surprise.
Teddy nodded. "You didn't think we were the only ones, did you?" he asked.
Victoire shrugged. "I guess not."
As they continued their patrol, Teddy showed her how to use the map of the fifth, sixth, and seventh floors to follow the prescribed patrol route. As they made their way around the castle, they stopped every so often to check in classrooms and offices that were empty at this hour, the Professors all off-duty for the time being while the prefects did their patrols.
As they were nearing the end of their rounds, Victoire found herself thinking. The castle was uncommonly quiet – she'd never spent much time in the halls when so few students were out. In fact, Victoire and Teddy were the only souls out on the whole seventh floor. The next nearest students wouldn't be closer than the fourth floor. Which meant that Victoire and Teddy were currently in an unprecedented situation of solitude.
"Hey Teddy?" Victoire said, her voice betraying what she wanted.
"Oh no," Teddy shook his head determinedly. "Not while we're on patrols. I'm Head Boy, I have to be responsible."
"But there's no one out here," Victoire insisted. "What would be so irresponsible about it?"
"It would be an abuse of power," Teddy said.
"We wouldn't be hurting anyone," Victoire replied.
"Fine, then it'd be an abuse of freedom," Teddy amended.
Victoire sighed audibly, and threaded her fingers through Teddy's. "Not even for a minute?" she pleaded. "As soon as we get back to that party, we'll never find a moment alone."
Teddy clenched his jaw as he tried to keep his wits about him.
"We've basically finished our patrols," Victoire said. "There's no reason why we can't take just ten minutes for ourselves before returning our notes to the prefect's lounge."
Victoire moved to stand in front of Teddy, cutting off his path and then stepped closer, getting right into his personal space.
"I suppose just ten minutes couldn't hurt…" Teddy murmured, unable to stop himself from leaning down and capturing Victoire's lips in a kiss.
Victoire pulled Teddy over to the wall so that her back was pressing up against it and kissed him more, loving that they were together again and could do this without worrying about someone walking in on them. All summer, Bill or Fleur had been only a short distance away, and last year there'd always been the chance that another student would come across them like Dominique did. Knowing there was no chance anyone would come by was thrilling and Victoire was determined to take advantage of their time.
"Alright," Teddy said eventually, pulling away and taking a step back. "We should… we have to get back now."
"Alright," Victoire nodded, smiling and taking Teddy's hand as he led her back down to the prefect's lounge to submit their blank report. "We don't want to miss the whole party, after all," she added.
