The creaking of the door alerts them to the intruder as he enters the room. A low growl issues forth from the dark shadows which cling to back of the abandoned classroom. Who dare enter their lair? Who dare disturb their quiet?

The man closes the large door behind him soundly as he hears two more growls join the first, accompanied by the large shuffling of the beast. Large paws hit the ground, sending tremours through the stone floor as the beast steps out of the shadows. Three pairs of large yellow eyes are focused on their visitor. Three sets of teeth are bared, with thick threads of drool seeping from their mouths.

He holds up his hand and their eyes follow, curious as to what he will do before they decide to tear him apart. Will he try to strike them? Will he plead in his unintelligible human babble?

But then he reaches out his hand towards them, inviting them to investigate and determine his worthiness. The motion creates a small breeze and his smell carries on the air. Pumpkins and earthy smell of wood and rain lingers on his skin, but there is another smell, one which allows them to recognize him. It is his smell.

The growls cease as they present their heads to his hand. He smiles beneath his curly beard, his eyes crinkling at the edges as he runs the hand across their snouts. He is their master and their protector. Most humans would be afraid, but not him. He has never been afraid. Why would he be afraid of a giant when he is one himself?
