This is a free-verse poem I did about Arwen, one of the few female characters from The Lord of the Rings. It is based on the books and especially from the Appendices where most of her tale was told.
Read and review!
She came into the world
Awaited and secure
The daughter of a king and queen
The sister of two brothers who were twins
As gentle as she was beautiful
She was likened to a dream come true.
-
For many years she lived
Yet she did not aged
As she strolled around her dwellings
Her brothers went to battle
Against the dark creatures of the Earth
Those who had hurt their mother.
-
Then came the day she did not plan
Her walk around the garden was different
She heard a singing before the voice called
Turned and saw him for the first time
He with the historic but protected past
The mortal who will steal her heart.
-
To her, love was a beautiful joy
But to her father the mortal was like a boy
Young and still learning about his past
That had given him a significant part
The one he must accept and fulfil
Because her father can only accept a king.
-
For years and years he strove
While she waited patiently at home
He befriended a wizard
Become a wise but disguised ranger
And part of the fellowship
Which set out to destroy a powerful Ring.
-
Though the fellowship failed
He fought his own battles
Against evil and a need to prove himself
But she helped give him light
Even when others felt it was hopeless
He emerged changed but unscathed.
-
When the war intensified
He finally revealed who he was
And went on to fight for his people
Until finally the Ring was destroyed
Their world was safe once again
She smiled, for he also was.
-
Everyone who could come came
They gathered around the palace and its path
Because their king has finally arrived
They saw the long-awaited crowning
But few of them managed to see
The beautiful scenes of the royal wedding.
-
But a happy ending it was not to be
For her choice to be with him
Meant she chose to be like him
And succumbed to the mortals' doom
She cried as her father departed
While she stayed in a now shortened life.
-
Though brief, her life was precious
They were happy and content
With a kingdom to rule
And children to care
It was how she envisioned her life to be
Worth every decade of waiting.
-
Yet it felt so soon when the time came
The children had grown
The people in safe homes
And age finally caught up with them
He who had fought every battle and won
Finally lost against time with a final breath.
-
And so she was alone again
Oh how she cried, even laughed sometimes
When she looked upon her colourful life
Walked around her garden and remembered
Their first and many other meetings
Like yesterday, though this time her heart pained.
-
Her sorrow was obvious to those who saw
The tears never stopped flowing
When it finally did, she lay down and slept
As beautiful as ever, never to wake again
She was Arwen Undomiel, Evenstar of her people
A sister and a daughter, a wife and a mother, an elf and a queen.
