Hey everyone! It's Naomi (obviously) lol. I really hope you enjoy this new story as much as my first one. I defintley think it's a bit different than the first one but still worth the read. I just wanted to point out, that while I will make minor descriptions of the female character's physical features, I wont really give you a full picture of how she looks or how I see her in my head. I thought it would be more fun for you guys to come up with your own ideas and images of how she would look or does look to you. Well anyway I really hope you guys enjoy! Reviews are always welcome.
"No way are we letting a fucking girl work on this boat!" Edgar fumed.
Sig sighed and leaned back into the captain's chair. It had been half an hour since he had called the crew in for a "quick family meeting" and almost wished he hadn't. On the one hand Nick, Jake, and Norman weren't against having a woman on board. In fact Junior seemed to be almost excited at the idea. But Edgar was being beyond stubborn and Matt, being his best friend, no doubt felt he had to back Edgar up.
"What happened to 'No women on the Northwestern! Ever!' ?" Edgar asked irritably as he did his best impersonation of Sig.
"Yeah Sig. You of all people should know women are bad luck on boats. And besides your paranoid enough as it is." Matt said, giving his unsolicited opinion.
"Matt...shut up. Edgar , get over it. She's going to be here any minute and we still have a lot of work to do." Sig said, feeling beat down before the King Crab season had even begun. ''Not a good sign'' he thought to himself miserably.
"Well who the hell is she anyway?" Edgar asked, still not ready to let up on his oldest brother. Sig took a deep breath to keep his temper from rising.
"I told you already. She used to come out here since she was 15 in the summer, working on canneries and onshore processors. By 18, she began working for captain Fred Ross of the catcher/processor vessel MidNight Sailor until she was 23 and she's even worked for Johnathan, fishing for salmon during the past three summers on his boat Fishing Fever. She comes to me highly recommended by both."
"So why doesn't she just work on the Time Bandit, if Johnathan likes her so much and trust her on another boat?" This time it was Jake Anderson to ask the question, but it wasnt with malice. He was just genuinely curious.
"Yeah, what Junior said! Why doesnt she just work for the Hillstrands?" Edgar asked, seeing this as evidence that she wasn't as good as she was being hyped up to be. Norman rolled his eyes, but said nothing as usual. Sig rolled his eyes as well, not realizing his younger brother of a year had just done the same.
"Because.." Sig started off with exasperation in his voice "They already have enough crew members on their boat. And besides Andy's girl, Jo works for them now. I think one woman is enough for them."
"So why does she want to work on a crab boat anyway?" Nick asked.
"Why dont you ask her yourself? She's here now." Sig said looking out the window to see a form throwing a duffel bag over the rail. Everyone else quickly looked out the window as well.
With the big black Dutch Harbor, Alaska hoddie, green cargo pants, and black rubber-boots, she looked almost gender nuetral. But a few strands of her long straight light brown hair escaped from under her black hat and he knew it could only be her. She hopped over the rail like she'd been doing it all her life, and looked around the deck a moment. She then picked up her duffel bag and began making her way up the stairs that led directly to the wheelhouse. Sig almost held his breath as she opened the door to wheelhouse. There was definitely tension.
"Permission?" The new female deckhand asked Sig before setting a foot inside and he gave her an encouraging smile.
"Yeah, come on in. Meet the guys."
She came inside, closed the door behind her, and set her duffle bag down before shaking hands with Sig and turning to face the crew.
"Hi everyone." She said in a polite tone. Jake was the first to put his hand out and they shook with smiles on their faces.
"Hi, I'm Jake. Jake Anderson."
"Nice to meet you. I'm Gianna. Gianna Giancola. But you guys can just call me Gia."
"Gia, Im Nick. Its very nice to meet you." He said stretching out his hand for her to shake.
"Nice to meet you Nick."
Gianna turned her attention to Norman and stuck out her hand. He shook it, giving her a small smile to be polite and simply said "Norman."
"Norman. Nice to meet you."
She looked down to where there was a man with dirty blonde hair sitting in the co-captians chair with a brown haired man standing beside him.
"Hi. I'm Gianna."
"I know." replied Edgar in what wouldn't be considered his best tone of voice.
"And you two are?" Gianna asked, in a still polite voice.
"Im your deck-boss. This is Matt. He's your fellow deckhand."
"Oh. Well it's nice to meet you."
"Thanks." Edgar said and Matt snickered. Jake rolled his eyes.
"Why dont I show you to your stateroom?" Jake asked trying to ease the tension.
"Good idea." Sig said, relieved by Jake's quick thinking.
"Sure. Sounds good." Gianna picked up her duffle bag and followed Jake down the stairs. Sig gave Edgar and Matt a hard look, which Edgar ignored as he stood up.
"I hope you dont expect me to go soft on her just because she's a girl."
"I never expect anything from you Edgar. Let alone manners." Sig said and Edgar rolled his eyes. "Besides I dont think she would want to be treated any differently than any other greenhorn would. The only thing I expect from you is to work hard and show her the ropes. Now everybody get your asses back to work. We have two days before we leave."
"Roger." They all said in unison and made their way outside to work.
Sig began looking over some old family charts and checking wheather reports. When he decided on a course to take he shifted his gaze to look out the window and saw Gianna being given orders from Edgar. And by the looks of it, he didnt seem to be saying it nicely. But from what Sig could also see she didnt look phased by his attitude.
"I really hope you make it kid." Sig said to himself and sighed. This would be a King Crab season to remember.
