watch my smile as it fades
CatRobbie
for Voldy and Mad, because they both love them
she's got a pretty little smile like a cheshire cat, all bright teeth and soft pink lips that stretch a little too wide. he's got a smile that seems to be only half of one, because only when he and rex smile together is it a true smile.
they're both a little too dependent on someone else – robbie on rex, cat on tori, because they both need someone else to speak for them, to be a little louder than they think they can be. they're the innocents of their little group – they aren't supposed to dream about tingling skin and lips, and teeth sinking into flesh. But sometimes cat wonders whether she'll ever want that, and robbie wonders whether he'll ever have it.
she's got cherry-red hair like a red velvet cupcake, because her natural blonde makes her vanish in a crowd, and even insecure little cat wants something to stop her from fading. he's got curly black hair and glasses and a puppet that stays with him wherever he goes, because he's terrified of standing out, and he's petrified of blending in.
he sits next to her at lunch, and their hands immediately link together, his torn nails twining with her sunshine yellow ones, because they're both insecure and lost and frightened of fading, and maybe now they can rely on each other, not anyone else.
"cat?"
"yes, robbie?"
"smile for me?" he asks tentatively, because her smile is widewidewide and it lights up the whole world, and he feels a little more complete when he's smiling with her.
