As they stood there looking forward in the refreshing spring air, the wind gently blew through their hair and the fragrance of the flowers on the hillside behind them flooded their sense of smell. The day was perfect as the sun's rays heated their skin to a very comfortable level. No jackets were needed to shield them from cold nor umbrellas to shelter them from rain.
They stood there side by side looking on as the words of the man in front of them echoed through each of their minds. Nobody could believe they were there together. The love he had for her was finally apparent and he no longer hid it from anybody. Every single person there knew she was his one true love, his heart and soul.
He couldn't imagine a day without her by his side. He didn't want to experience another morning without her cuddled next to him while his arm tingled from her laying on it all night. He refused to think of drinking his morning coffee without her sitting across from him at the breakfast table as the sun peered through the kitchen window.
He was surprised that their two small children, Drew and Maggie, were standing with him on this day. He never imagined they would be here for this ceremony, but sometimes life takes unexpected turns. His other five children were there, Dickie and Eli standing directly behind him while his other three daughters stood beside their brothers. He was still taken aback whenever he thought of the fact that he was the father to seven children. But they were seven of the eight best things to ever happen to him. The other being the beautiful woman in front of him.
As he began to feel the sting of tears forming in his eyes again, he scanned the crowd acknowledging the attendees. He wasn't surprised when he saw Cragen as he was the closest thing Olivia had ever had to a father. He noticed Fin and Munch to the left of Cragen and Rollins and Amaro to the right. Melinda was walking from her vehicle parked on the small path behind them lined with a row of trees. Casey and Alex had both flown in for the occassion and were situated in the back row of the crowd. He noticed many other familiar faces as he skimmed the group. He was happy so many people had shown to support them and show their love for his family.
As they all stood there together looking forward in the refreshing spring air, they looked upon Olivia's lifeless body lying within the white casket. Her hair and makeup had been made up perfectly and she looked as if she would awaken at any moment. He was beginning to understand in that moment that he would never see her smile again, or see the glow within her deep brown eyes. He couldn't believe he would never hear her say she loved him again. He knew he was going to face the most difficult challenge of all when their children questioned why their mother wasn't returning home.
"We have come together from different places and we are all at different stages on our journeys through this life. Our paths are varied and we look at life in different ways. But there is one thing we all have in common here today. At one point or another, our lives have been touched by Olivia Benson-Stabler," the preacher concluded the ceremony and gently closed the casket lid.
Elliot stood there looking forward as the soft spring breeze blew upon his face, as the sun shone down upon him and as he realized he had just seen his wife for the last time.
