Night Had Begun to Die

"Kakashi, you'll be pulled out of ANBU."

No, he didn't want to be pulled out of ANBU. He needed it. He liked it. He liked submersing himself in the adrenaline-inducing fights, liked the constant planning needed to execute an assassination, liked the look in peoples' eyes everytime he saved them from certain deaths. If he was pulled out, to be a normal jounin… he'll have free time. Daily free time that is not available for ANBU Captains. He'll be sleeping in his apartment again instead of the ANBU Barracks. He'll stare at that dreaded team picture he couldn't stand to throw away.

Obito was hideous. Half of his entire body was under a giant boulder. If the base was flat, Obito would have died instantly. Instead it was roughly round in shape, and Obito had to feel the giant stone working with gravity to flatten his eye and skull and shoulder, and fingers and thigh and toes. He endured all that pain so that Kakashi can have his eye transplanted by Rin.

And God, Rin. They had been fighting for twelve hours non-stop in a three-way war between Konoha, Kumo and Iwa. Twelve hours of defending waves upon waves from getting into the walls. They couldn't take a deep breath for even a moment before spotting an enemy immediately after one is down. And then yellow flashes came and the entire enemy waves were dead. It was a relief. It was cause for celebration until Kiri swoops in and kidnapped Rin out of nowhere and when he rescued her and was fighting off the enemies and when only one more, he just needed to take down one more beside him so they can make a straight run towards reinforcements… He felt the cloth first, then her breast, then her ribcage, her beating heart, her spine and then the cold, biting misty air.

He couldn't recall Minato-sensei's expression that day when he reported the failed mission. He was too in shock. He just saw a blur of yellow and blue and jonin flak jacket – which quickly morphed into a white Hokage cloak before he even digested the news. An entire year off of the stressful battlefield, an entire year sleeping between his apartment and Minato-sensei's mansion. An entire year finally trying to hang out for a dinner with his comrades that are not Obito or Rin or Minato-sensei. Then news of the baby came and Kakashi prepared to show happy emotions for Kushina-neesan and the baby. Suddenly, they were on a battlefield again, this time it was directly on Konoha and not foreign lands. Orders to defend and give time for the Hokage and he had to watch as wave upon wave of his comrades were sent towards the demon only to be crushedthrownbattedpressedblowneaten up and then he got knocked out and the first thing he heard as he woke up on the tent for the injured ninja was Yondaime-sama is dead.

Kakashi blinked hard to prevent a tear escaping his eye socket. It hadn't even been 30 seconds since the Hokage ordered him to be pulled out and he was already on the verge of crying. He
