On a hot day around the first week in July, a young Nymphadora Tonks came home from her summer job as an assistant in Zonko's joke shop, finding her mother sitting at the kitchen table with a letter addressed to her in her hand.
"Did my letter about Auror training come in the mail?" Nymphadora asked her mother.
"Yes it did, but I don't want you to get your hopes up" Andromeda told her daughter.
Then she handed her daughter the letter and watched for her reaction. Nymphadora tore open the letter and then had a look of shock and disbelief on her face.
"Provisional acceptance because of my background! What could be in my background that could be so bad?" she exclaimed.
"I can tell you two things" her mother answered her.
"What are they?" her daughter asked.
"Your Aunt Bella and your cousin Sirius" her mother answered.
"What do they have to do with anything?" Tonks asked.
"Well do you know why they're in prison? "her mother asked.
"No, just that they hurt and killed a lot of people" Tonks answered her.
There was a long pause as Andromera was worried about telling the truth about her family.
"Well, some people in the Auror department have a strong dislike for my family because of what they've done" Andromera told her.
"What haven't you told me?" her daughter asked.
"Well, first your Aunt Bella caused some serious harm to a couple of Aurors a few years ago" Andromera told her daughter.
"Well, I'm not my aunt, plus weren't you disowned from your family by marrying dad?" her daughter asked.
"Yes, but they still see me as her sister. Plus, the last time they trusted a Black they were blindsided by him" Tonk's mother told her.
"What did he do?" Tonks asked. "Well, he betrayed his best friends to You Know Who right before his downfall and then afterwards when another one of their friends confronted him about it, he mutilated him. Then he blew up a street and killed 13 muggles. Plus, he was an Auror as well" her mom told her.
"What does that have to do with me?" her daughter asked.
"Well, he was the last Black that they trusted and he let them down big time" her mother told her.
"Yes, but that doesn't mean that I'll do the same thing" Tonks told her mother.
"Yes but even I felt the repercussions of what my sister had done" her mother told her.
"How?" her daughter asked.
"Well, I lost my job as a Healer at St. Mungo's and went into training as a muggle nurse" her mother told her.
"Yes, but that happened to you, but I won't let it happen to me", besides didn't someone high up in the Ministry send their son to prison for attacking a couple of Aurors?" her daughter answered her.
"Yes, and it really hurt his career in the Ministry, but he also gained a lot of respect as well for being willing to put his own son away. Hopefully they will realize that you were young when those events occurred, so they are giving you a chance" her mother told her.
"Some chance" Tonks replied.
"Be happy with this chance because they could have outright rejected you. This means that you would have to work harder than everyone else just to get the same respect that they're getting" her mother told her.
"Well, I guess I'll have to accept this and work harder to prove that I'm not my aunt nor cousin" Tonks answered her.
