Hope
Continuing to twirl Aeryn's hair, John couldn't help wondering over her conviction regarding Crais' ability to change. Was it just Aeryn's attempt at being hopeful or was there something else behind it? It still irked him that she'd been spending time with the former Peacekeeper behind his back. He wasn't certain he wanted an answer to his question but it kept nagging at him. Would she even tell him the truth if he did ask? There was only one way to find out.
"Do you mind if I ask you a question?" he said softly, trying to appear nonchalant.
"I suppose not." she responded, twisting around to face him with a somewhat suspicious look on her beautiful face.
"After everything he's done, why are you so convinced that Crais can change?"
Aeryn bit her lip and continued to stare at him as she thought this over. She remained silent for so long, John didn't think she was going to answer. Finally, though, he felt her take a deep, steadying breath.
"Believing in Crais helps me to believe in myself. It gives me hope that, if someone like him can change, so can someone like me."
John didn't know how to respond to that. He wanted to tell her that she and Crais were nothing alike, that she was special. That there was noone out there like her. But one look in her eyes told him she needed this hope and he'd be damned if he took that away from her. Instead he remained silent, giving her a small nod of understanding. She smiled back and turned away from him once more. He tightened his hold on her before taking up a strand of her hair to continue his earlier ministrations. Hope; it was such a simple word but John knew how much power it held. And how much it hurt when it was lost.
The End
