Weddings

The next time he saw him was at his sister's wedding.

Hiei nodded at Yusuke, who was congratulating the happy couple, and then moved on to talk to Kurama, whom he had not seen since they had parted ways years ago. The last time had been a few months after the Demon War, at Yusuke's wedding. It seemed like weddings were always the only place where they saw each other.

"Hello, Hiei."

"Kurama," Hiei greeted with a nod. His eyes swept over the other: Kurama's human body had aged, but not by much.

"I haven't seen or heard from you since..." Kurama paused, thinking. "Yusuke's wedding."

"Ah."

"How have you been? Do you enjoy working for Mokuro?"

Hiei nodded. "Mokuro is an interesting female." The last part slipped out by accident, but he could not help it. Lately, he had been noticing more and more, that Mokuro was, besides being a hard master, undoubtedly female.

"Are you happy?" Kurama looked calm, though he appeared interested in the answer.

"I am," Hiei agreed.

"So that's why I haven't heard from you...?" Kurama sighed. "I suppose that once all the fights are over, there's no real reason to contact each other, is there?"

Their interactions in the past had always been a call to the other to fight, for whatever the reason. There was no one in the battle field that Hiei trusted more than Kurama, and he knew the feeling was mutual.

"I suppose," Kurama mused, "That with peace, we'd drift apart rather naturally." He sipped his wine, and then shrugged. "No feelings hurt or anything. It's more or less what I expected. Still, it would be nice to hear from you occasionally. You may not care what happens to me, but I'm still interested in what happens to you."

Hiei blinked, then scowled. "I assumed that everything was fine with you, the way it was with me." He gave Kurama an annoyed look. "Humans need to constantly remind each other of their friendships. Demons don't. You know that if you were in trouble, I would help."

Kurama's lip turned slightly up. "Yeah, I know. The same goes for me. Still..." He studied the other. "It would still be nice to hear from you sometime. For old time's sake."

Hiei smirked. "Then get married and I'll go to your wedding."

Kurama's nose twitched. "So if I wanted to see you more often, I would have to get married frequently?"

"Maybe." Hiei's expression did not change, but inside, he was smiling. "And I'll always come."
