There once was a girl named Lorelei. Lorelei had a friend named Truman who she had known since kindergarten. They had been best friends since they had all the same classes until 5th grade. Then they unfortunately drifted apart a little. Luckily, they went to the same middle school and became friends again. Not really good friends, but good enough friends that whenever they passed each other in the hall, Lorelei would say, "Ew, it's Truman!" and he would reply, "Ew, it's Lorelei!" Yes, I know, it was childish. But it was the only thing linking them together in that time when they had nothing. They had no classes and none of the same friends. Truman was sort of popular while Lorelei was only known for getting straight A's every quarter.
Once they reached 7th grade, Truman and Lorelei started hanging out together again. They made a deal that they would help each other with their crushes. Of course, it never did work, but that wasn't the point. The point was that they were getting to be really good friends...and they were getting to like each other. As in like-like. But they kept it secret. They still didn't have any classes together though, so that sucked for them.
Finally, in 8th grade, they had one class together: English. It was both of their favorite subject and they had a lot of fun. They became best friends from bonding in that class. Alas, they were still in love with each other.
One day, Lorelei decided to make the first move. She planned on asking Truman out after English. As soon as the bell rang, Lorelei hurried outside with her other best friend, Alyssa.
"I'm going to ask Truman out!" she whispered to Alyssa.
"Oh...do you want me to skidaddle?" Alyssa asked.
"No...stay, for the moral support."
"Alrighty." Truman came out of the classroom.
"Truman!" Lorelei said, maybe a bit too loudly.
"Yeah?" he answered.
"Um...uh...er..." Lorelei stammered. Why couldn't she say the words out loud?
"She wants to go out with you!" Alyssa said boldly. Lorelei covered her face with her hands, too embarassed to do anything. Truman chuckled.
"Really? You want to go out with me?" he asked Lorelei. She nodded, hands still on her face.
"Okay." Truman said. And with that, he took Lorelei's hand away from her face and held it in his. Lorelei looked up into his eyes.
"Okay," she said back, and they walked down the hall together.

24 hours later, everything was chaos. Truman and Lorelei's friends were constantly bothering them and trying to make them kiss. It annoyed them greatly. The bell signaled that lunch was over and they started walking to English together.
"Lorelei...I think we were better off just being friends." Truman said kindly.
"Yeah, I know..." Lorelei said, concealing the hurt in her eyes. So from that moment on, they were just friends. But Lorelei still liked Truman. Truman moved on from crush to crush to crush, never really finding a girl he wanted to stay with. His mind always drifted back to Lorelei, but he always convinced himself it would never work out, as those 24 hours had proved. He started ignoring her all together, hoping that it would make him get over her faster. It just hurt them both even more though, especially Lorelei. But Lorelei moved on to better guys. She finally found the right guy, and Truman finally found the right girl. They became friends again and hoped to always be just friends.
