They had spent one night together.

One night of bliss.

It had been just after her father died; she'd been upset and turned up on his doorstep with a 6-pack.

After finishing that they had moved onto a bottle of vodka, between them finishing the half-full bottle. Then as they say, one thing led to another and Jack had woken up the next morning in bed alone with a killer hangover and a note with only two words,

"I'm Sorry"

By some unspoken agreement they had never mentioned that night, and a few weeks later she married him.

After that he and Sam drifted apart. She was off limits and he had to deal with that, so when General Hammond retired, he jumped at the chance to head up Homeworld Security in Washington.

The next time he properly saw Sam was 7 years later at the 15th anniversary of the SGC. She was there with Pete and her daughter.

Her 6½ year old daughter who reminded him of someone else: Charlie.

Sam's daughter looked exactly like Charlie had at that age; they had the same eyes, cheeky grin and blonde hair.

Jack watched, jealous, as she interacted with Pete, and even with Daniel and Teal'c warmly.

Jack locked eyes with Sam across the room, her sad eyes saying everything, "I'm Sorry."

Six year old Allison Carter-Shanahan was his daughter.

A daughter he'd never know.

Another child he'd lost.
