Chapter One: Missing Close Friends

'Colonel Kira, Doctor Bashir is here to see you.'

The Bajoran woman put down the PADD she was reading. 'Send him in.' She returned. If she listened carefully, she could almost imagine Chief O'Brien saying those words, in his Irish accent. She smiled sadly. It was a year to the day almost everyone had left. Worf, Chief and Keiko, Captain Sisko, Rom, and what hurt the most, was that Odo had left. True, his people needed him, but at that point Kira hadn't realised just how much she needed him.

The doors opened, and the Colonel looked up to see Julian entering, looking tired, but still with the same, cheeky smile on his face that he had had since the day he had arrived on DS9. Kira looked harder. No, not the same, there was that sad quality to it. He missed Chief O'Brien, she could see that now. He had privately complained to her about how Ezri wouldn't live up to Miles' holodeck standards, which gave the Colonel reason to believe the two men were closer than they looked.

'What can I do for you, Doctor?' Kira asked. Julian opened his mouth, before closing it and looking down.

'This is more of a...personal affair, Colonel, but I wondered if you would come to Quarks for a party we're having in honour of our close friends, and to celebrate the end of the Dominion war. Me and Ezri would be glad to see you there...' Bashir asked, before closing his mouth.

'I'll give it some thought, Doctor. It's a good idea.' The red-head returned, smiling. 'Anything else?' She added, her smile abruptly leaving her face with a business-like look upon it. Bashir shook his head. 'No? Dismissed.' She said, nodding her head. The doctor nodded his head at the command and left the room.

'No sign of her?' Asked the doctor. Quark shook his head. 'Damn, I thought she might show, if only to respect Odo.' Bashir muttered. The Ferengi looked at him with surprise.

'You speak about him as if he is dead, doctor.' Quark replied. Julian blinked.

'No, nothing of the sort! If he were, I think the Colonel would have a lot more reason to come!' Returned the doctor. Ezri walked over and took a seat next to Julian. 'Still no sign?' She asked.

'No.' Both Quark and Julian replied with a sigh. They turned their heads from the promenade, and started to talk about memories they had of Warf, and how the Klingon despised Quark. Behind them, the Colonel approached. An hour late, but there all the same.

'Sorry I'm late, I had a bit of trouble deciding what to wear.' She stated. Ezri raised her eyebrow. 'You? Have trouble deciding what to wear? How many items of clothing come in the colour red?' Dax asked, before smiling at her own comment. Kira gave her half a scathing look, before replying; 'Oh, only half a dozen. But I do have clothes of other colours.'

Ezri gave a small snort of laughter, which reminded Kira of Odo. Those wounds were still as fresh as they were a year ago. Kira smiled bravely though. 'So what's next?' She asked, tilting her head. Bashir opened his mouth to speak, before the comm. Badge pinned to Kira's red dress beeped.

'Ops to Colonel Kira, a message is waiting for you. It's urgent.' A Starfleet ensign announced. 'That's next.' Nerys sighed shaking her head. 'I'll be back in about half an hour.' She said to the others.
