Author's Note- I know I should be working on my other stories, but you guys gotta understand that when I get an idea, I can't just make it go away. It nags at me until I write it. Prologue

Papermoon

"Echizen-sama!"

"Echizen-san! Look here!"

"How do you feel about tennis?"

"Are you ready for the match against the American champions?"

"How does it feel to walk in the shadows of both your older brother, Echizen Ryoma, but also your father, Echizen Nanjiro?"

An arm dropped down on the shoulders of Echizen Meiyo, thirteen years old, and the youngest queen of the tennis world, even if she'd lost the championship the previous year.

"Let's get going, Meiyo-chan," Her mother said, pulling her away from the crowd.

"What will you do if you lose?"

The last words of the reporter echoed in her ears as her knees buckled under her.

"Game, set, and match to Maria Daniels!"

Cheers rose up, too loud.

Echizen Meiyo blinked tear-filled eyes, and then stood to go and shake hands.

"Looks as if the queen has been dethroned," Maria said. A cold sneer marred her features, and Meiyo felt her heart clench in her chest.

Nevertheless, she walked proudly away, her head held high, even when the reporters roared into her.

"What are you going to do now, Echizen-san?"

"Now that you are no longer the queen of tennis, what will you do?"

The questions poured from all over, and once again, an arm came down on her shoulders, though this time, it was her father. His normally easy-going eyes were narrowed dangerously. Meiyo could see her brother standing a few feet away, his own eyes narrowed.

The eyes that were twins of hers turned, asking if she was okay.

"Come on, Meiyo-chan. We need to get home."

On the plane ride home, she uttered the words that would spin her fate off in entirely different directions than anyone would've thought.

"I'm quitting tennis."

Notes- Meiyo is two years younger than Ryoma. Therefore, at this time, he's fifteen.
