Mute Meaning

Red didn't talk much in the past. Now he never does.

It's dark in Mount Silver. So dark that flash is needed. Bloody useless technique…just damage the enemy…or reduce their stats in more meaningful ways…all comes down to numbers…

Red shakes it off. He has to focus. He has to train. He has to catch the pokémon in the caves.

It seems more than three years since when he first started his journey. A wide-eyed boy from Pallet Town, getting his starter pokémon, losing to Blue in what was thankfully the first time (can't lose after all. Can't lose…can't lose…). It seems an age ago when he was entrusted with catching all 150 pokémon…which he did, thank you very much professor. Now praise in academic circles. No reward bar some bloody certificate received in Celadon City. No support for the bandwidth required to store over 140 pokémon in storage, not including all the nidoran duplicates because he'd forgotten which gender he'd caught. No…nothing at all.

Nothing to help with the psychological damage he received. 150 pokémon…and Missingo…its horror scarred into his mind, and PC when he tried to store it. Nothing to help him download Mew from the ether…no…nothing…

…and then 100 more pokémon are discovered. Sorry Red, but you're nothing now.

And so he remains here in Mt. Silver, isolated from the world. Humans ignore him. Pokémon fear him, knowing that they'll be captured or defeated with a single move that isn't even a hyper beam. He's had enough of Kanto and Johto. Of Team Rocket and gym leaders. Of the Elite Four, those smug bastards, who wouldn't even let him heal his pokémon between battles bar potions that cost a bloody fortune. No…he'll stay here. He'll ignore his calling…

…or try to. Because Red is silent…yet whispers all the same. Whispers in the dark…

"…gotta catch 'em all…"

A/N

The idea for this stemmed from a comment I saw on Deviantart, where a user joked that the reason Red is holed up in Mount Silver is because of a traumatic experience with Missingo. Personally though, I believe that given the level of his pokémon, he simply wanted a challenge. And that having an extra 100 pokémon to catch didn't do him any favours after his 'reward' for catching the first 150. ;)
