Once
Once I thought I had loved,
Then I learned the meaning.
Once I thought I had lived,
Then I learned that I was dreaming.
Once I thought I held her heart,
My future set before me.
Once I thought we would never part
If only I had had a way to see...
Once I thought I knew her,
Now I know that I was wrong.
My mind sees the way we were,
Like some half remembered song.
Her hair was wild and crazy;
A true lion's mane.
I know now that I was lazy,
I think I was insane.
Her eyes were cinnamon and round,
They held a twinkle I never knew.
Her smile was so profound,
I never knew it was for you.
From the first time that I saw her,
I knew she was the one.
From the time that we were children
Our lives were adventurous and fun.
Through our years I was seeing,
My future loving wife.
All the time she was searching,
For the one to show her life.
Once I thought that she was mine,
Then I saw her true.
Her smile never lit for me,
It only lights for you.
I see it in her eyes,
I never stood a chance.
I wanted to believe my lies,
However, the truth was there in a glance.
Someday I will tell her that I once loved her,
Someday I will tell her that was true.
I will tell her that I walked away,
So she could be with you.
You've never been a man of wit,
Never nice or kind.
We always called you the 'Bat like Git'
I think she's lost her mind.
But slowly I can see it,
The difference in her gaze;
The sparkle that is slowly lit
With your unspoken praise.
My mother doesn't understand it,
My father says nothing out loud
My sister, well she had a fit,
Though my best friend is quite proud.
Once, my dear Hermione,
I thought that you were mine,
Now my crush is behind me,
I've learned I'll be just fine.
I wonder what will happen,
Many years from now.
Will he love you as I thought that I did?
Does he even truly know how?
Once I thought I knew him,
All Evil, Dark, and Sarcastic.
I realize now what I had not then,
She thought he was fantastic.
Once I thought that I would show him,
I would win her with my charm.
Then I saw him watching her,
I knew she'd never come to harm.
I know that once I saw him,
Giving her a smirk.
I couldn't believe my own eyes!
I thought he was a jerk.
Once I saw him take her hand,
I saw them share a smile.
There was a golden, shining band
He led her down the wedding aisle.
I knew it was forever.
A/N: Thank you for reading my poem. I've been writing stories for years but never once have I let a single sole read them. I decided to give it a shot on here. Although I'm nervous about what you all might think about my work, I'd really appreciate your reviews. Any feedback is welcome, but please if you flame me, keep it on low heat. I burn really easy.
A/N: For those of you who read chapter 2 when I had it up here I thank you for your comments and suggestions. I've decided to take it down because the more I re-read it the more unhappy I was with it. I feel that this poem stands better as a Oneshot.
