Chapter I

Sam walked into the crowded lunchroom of Darton High, her eyes scanning over the many people there. Her eyes caught a glimpse of familiar white-blonde hair, before Jen walked over to her. "Gosh, I've had 3 tests already and 2 more to go! Could this day get any worse?" Jen complained.

"Jen, you're the one who is good at school! Stop complaining." Sam said in a mostly joking tone. Looking past Jen Sam spotted Darrel and Rachel laughing and talking. Jen turned to see what she was staring "Jen, You want to go on a ride today after school?" Sam asked, trying to distract her from the fact that she had been staring at Darrel.

"Umm, sure." Jen said. The two girls sat talking for several more minutes before it was time for their next class.

"What do you have next?" Sam asked.

"English. You?" Jen replied.

"Algebra." Sam said breaking away from Jen and slowly skipping towards her Algebra class.

Sam, who couldn't concentrate during Algebra on a good day, completely zoned out. The teacher was just a drone in the background to the slide show playing in her head. She couldn't get the picture of Darrel and Rachel, laughing together, out of her head. Were they just friends? Were they something more? Her grip on the pencil in her hand grew so tight she was surprised it didn't snap.

And, of course, she didn't want to share her thoughts with anyone, especially not Jen. Jen would try to help, sure, but what if she just laughed in her face, asking if Sam was ok? Sam was brought out of her daze by the teacher yelling out her name. She quickly picked up her pencil again and copied what was on the board in front of her, her mind still reeling.

Jen loved her advanced English class. The stories they read, the topics they were assigned for essays... it all captured her attention. But not today. Sam was acting weird... Jen desperately wanted to know what she had been staring at.

It was obvious that whatever Sam had been staring at, she didn't want Jen to notice. Was it something big? Or just something Sam was trying to hide? She would ask her on the bus. Right now she had to concentrate on the outline of her essay...

That afternoon after the bell rang Sam made a bee line for the bus trying to avoid Jake, Jen, & Rachel but most of all Sam was trying to avoid Darrel. Almost there. Sam thought as she turned the corner and almost bumped into Jake. "Sorry." Sam said quickly leaving before he could ask why she was in a hurry. Honestly she had no idea why she wanted to avoid everyone so badly.

Stepping on the bus Sam let out a sigh of relief and went to her usual spot on the bus to wait for Jen. After a few short moments she spotted Jen's blonde braids bouncing as she walked towards Sam.

"So what was up at lunch today?" Jen asked. "You seemed to be in some kind of trance."

"Me?" Sam asked, going for the play dumb approach.

"Yes you." Jen said.

Sam waited a few minutes before she started to reply and then realized Jen wasn't going to push the subject. She had side stepped the question... for now.
