Never More Than We Can Handle
The rain beating down on the pavement, the constant swoosh of the sliding medal doors, the incoming and retreating wail of sirens…
All of these noises were about to push her over the ledge she was already teetering on.
She couldn't handle it
This was too much
There were no emotions left, no twinge of pain, not depths of her sorrow that was sure to swallow her whole
No there was nothing
Nothing but a gaping hole that from that moment would only continue to grow.
The soft touch on her shoulder made her flinch away in disgust. No, no more of their pity, she couldn't take it.
"Please, Em, let us take you home"
That voice that was normally so sweet and cheery sounded now to Emily like fingernails on a chalkboard.
"Emily, it's been hours"
Another voice barely audible in the fog of her mind.
Had it really been hours, it felt like milliseconds to her.
Of course when your life comes to an end, time is really the least of your worries.
"Em, you can't stand here in the rain, you're freezing."
She wanted to scream at them, rage at the top of her lungs that she didn't… couldn't feel the rain soaking through her clothes and allowing itself to mix with the red deeply imbedded into the fabric…
no not just the fabric…imbedded into her very skin, into her own body. It was a part of her.
The ironic mix of red and clear liquid that ended up as a steady stream of faded pink down the pavement at her feet.
She couldn't help but see herself float away with the pinkish river.
"Emily there is nothing more we can do here"
They don't understand…. There was nothing more she could do anywhere anymore.
Her life had ended the second that eerie sound signaled the end of the life of the person she promised to love and protect forever…
"Em, she wouldn't want you to do this to yourself"
HA her own mind leapt to laugh at her! 'She wouldn't want me to do this to myself" the words mocked her own conscious.
"NO what she would WANT is to be here with me!" the words escaping her lips without hesitation.
The faces that belonged to the people she once recognized slowly came into focus. Their expressions made her stomach churn. Their worry, concern, and PITY caused every fiber in her body to want to strangle them all right there.
She didn't recognize the five figures standing in front of her, the figures of five of her closest friends.
The void inside of her didn't allow her to recognize herself anymore.
It was odd when the memory of her childhood popped into her mind at that very moment.
She found the five figures still starring at her when she finally met each one of their gazes.
The words she said next came from a part of her that would soon be swallowed by the growing hole inside of her, but for the moment she found the strength to let them out.
"You know," she started no emotion in her voice, still holding the gazes of those she use to call friends thinking of all the evils of life they had witnessed together.
The evils that she had naively thought they were impervious to. The evils that had now destroyed the one beautiful piece that had made her whole.
"They always said you are never given more than you can handle," she paused.
Their stares and nods weren't able to make a dent in her consciousness.
"They were wrong," she finished and turned to walk away into the now noiseless night, allowing the hole inside of her to take the last pieces of her life.
A/N this oneshot just kinda came to me. It was powerful to me and I hope you got something from reading it. As always I am open to whatever feedback and reviews you are willing to give. Thanks
