Making No Promises
Rex jumped as his phone began vibrating. He put his video game on pause and dug into his jacket pocket to retrieve it. The Caller ID read "Call from Noe." Rex smiled as he answered the call. "Hey buddy, what's up?"
"Have I ever told you how much I hate calculus?" Noah asked, sighing heavily over the phone.
Rex chuckled. "Do you want me to answer that for this week or since you started taking it?"
"Whichever number is highest."
"They're about even," Rex replied with a laugh.
Noah groaned and Rex heard the sound of graphite scribbling on paper and figured Noah was venting out his frustration on his notebook.
"You're still at the school library?" He asked, grabbing the TV remote and pushing a button. The sound disappeared and a red icon on the bottom right corner declared that the TV had in been muted. Rex carelessly tossed the remote on the cushion next to him and leaned back into his lounging position on the couch.
"Yeah."
"You sound tired," Rex observed voicing his thoughts before he could stop himself.
"Yeah, never thought I'd get tired of looking at books," Noah agreed sadly.
Rex blinked and pulled the phone away from his ear to look at the phone in confusion. It was Noah he was talking to he just couldn't tell if Noah was joking or not; which most likely meant a little of both. Rex tucked the phone between his shoulder and chin, freeing his hand to pick up the game controller and un-paused the screen. His character was freed from its stasis and started punching the nearest enemy it could find.
"When are you coming home?" He asked instead.
"Soon, maybe an hour-"
"Maybe now?" Rex prompted. He smiled as he heard Noah laugh into the phone.
"I'll try: no promises though. I really have to get this report done."
"Why not just check out a bunch of books and do your research here?" Rex asked, gesturing around Noah's house even though he knew that Noah couldn't see him.
"Yeah, right and have you distract me with soap operas and video games? I don't think so."
Rex responded with a grunt of satisfaction as his virtual-self broke the back of a thug in slow motion. "What did you say?"
"Exactly," Noah laughed. "Just don't; just don't eat any more junk. I'm making real food for dinner tonight."
"I make no promises," Rex teased and hung up the phone.
End. Thanks for reading.
