Summary: It's Christmastime and Luna Lovegood happens to overhear a conversation between Hermione and Ginny that leads her to believe that it's high time she gives Malfoy the gift he deserves. Sixth Book.
Luck from Luna
"That damn Malfoy," Ginny ranted, walking down the hall with Hermione. "It's been months, but I still can't get over the fact that Harry almost didn't make it to school because of him. He might have lain there undiscovered for...who knows how long! It's a good thing Tonks found him..."
"...or else I might have given that sniveling blonde something more than a good sock in the nose..." muttered Hermione vehemently, and Ginny looked surprised.
"My, aren't you..." she began, and Hermione growled.
"In a good mood today? You don't say..."
Their voices faded as the two girls disappeared around the bend to join up with all the other people leaving school for the holidays. Luna stared at the wall for a good long minute with one hand absently searching through her hair for her spare quill, before straightening up and grabbing her bag.
Oh, she'd heard bits and pieces - these things didn't escape Luna Lovegood easily - but Luna hadn't really thought about it much. The first months of school had been a bit busy with preparing for her OWLs and practicing her stitching. After all, the lonely snortlefooks in the rafters would all need mittens for the cold days ahead. But Harry had asked her to go to a Christmas party. It was rather nice, and he'd even offered to go as her friend, which was very thrilling.
But what Malfoy had done was decidedly not nice. In fact, she decided, she was very displeased with him for bothering Harry. Harry was her friend, and deserved to be treated in a politer way than this boy had treated him.
Luna rummaged through her book bag and began to wander towards her Head of House's office to be Floo-ed home. She fished out a quill and parchment, scribbled a note, then decided to stop by Hagrid's hut before leaving.
Ron was jabbering on about Apparition lessons, but Harry wasn't listening. Christmas hadn't been too exciting, outside of some off-key singing and a visit by Rufus Scrimegour. But still, it hadn't been all that bad, and he was glad to visit the Burrow.
The hall was a little more crowded then usual, and people seemed to be whispering excitedly all morning. Harry did not notice it at first, but then he began to wonder if he had missed something.
"Hey you!" he jabbed a finger at a group of fourth and fifth year Ravenclaws passing by. "What's going on?"
They all collapsed into a fit of giggles, attracting Ron's raised eyebrow, but Harry did his best to pretend he didn't look like a complete fool. Finally, one of the girls piped up.
"Oh really, you didn't hear? Lovegood sent one of those Slytherin boys...one of the ones who was on the Inquisitorial Squad last year...a Christmas present! I don't think he liked it much though, tee hee..."
Harry frowned and marched ahead, leaving a bemused Ron to trail after him.
"Sounds like she really is loony," the redhead puffed as he jogged to catch up with his friend. "Hey, are you alright, mate?"
"A Slytherin from last year's Inquisitorial Squad..." Harry said more to himself then Ron. "Why would Luna be sending Malfoy anything?"
Dear Draco Malfoy,
You shouldn't have hexed Harry, it wasn't very nice.
I'm sending you a niffler. In ancient times these were given to wrongdoers because they were thought to bring bad luck. I believe it is an appropriate punishment.
Your Unfriend,
Luna Lovegood
Fin.
