Chapter 1
One day Amber comes home from Kelsey's house and walks through the door into the kitchen.
''Hey, Nana,'' Amber says.
''Hey, sweetie,'' Camille responds warmly.
''Where's Mom?'' Amber asks.
''Oh, I think she maybe either be in the attic or in the guest house," Camille tells her.
''Oh, okay, I'll find her.'' Amber goes and looks around. ''Mom!'' she yells all through the house and finally goes out to the guest house and opens the door. ''Mom!'' she yells again
Sarah bumps her head on Adam and Crosby's old desk from where they used to do thier homework in highschool. "Ow," Sarah complains, rubbing her head. ''Oh, Amber, good, you're home!'' she says and gets up from sitting underneath the desk and walks over to her daughter.
"Hey!'' Sarah says happily.
''Hey, what are you doing?'' Amber questions her.
''Oh, you know, just some packing,'' Sarah answers vaguely.
''Um, why?'' Amber questions her.
''Because Gordon asked me to move in with him and I accepted,'' Sarah announces, her smile tentative.
''What?'' her daughter exclaimed.
''Yeah, he seemed to think it was a good idea that I get out of here and live with him,'' Sarah explains.
''But why?'' Amber pressed, unable to fully understand her mother's decision.
''Because, honey, I can't live here forever, and you're going off to college in a few days so I have no reason to live here anymore."
''But what about Drew?'' Amber pointed out in hopes that would give her pause.
''He wants to move back to Berkeley with his dad and is insistent that that's what he's going to do,'' Sarah declares.
''And you're going to let him?'' Amber demanded. ''That's crazy!''
''No, honey, it is what it is, and I have no choice and say in the matter because he doesn't care about my opinion that he should stay here and finish out the rest of his high school career,'' Sarah responds, her voice taking on a note of resignation.
''He's just going to turn into dad,'' Amber mumbles dejectedly.
"What was that?" Amber straightened at the stern tone her mother took.
''Nothing, nothing,'' Amber lies, grabbing some books putting them in a box nearby.
