AN:This is something I wrote a number of years ago that I rediscovered. I just thought I'd post it.
Disclaimer: JK Rowling owns the Harry Potter series. I just borrowed her characters for a little while.
Hermione could not shake off the fear that it might be too late as her eyes searched the crowd for a familiar head of red hair. She wasn't sure if she would be able to live with herself if she didn't get the chance to apologize to him. The thought that the last thing she might have said to Charlie was that she never wanted to see him again made her sick. All she wanted was the chance to tell him that she loved him, and that she understood now he was afraid.
It had been a stupid fight really. He had rushed to Shell Cottage the moment he heard that she was there. Bill hadn't been able to keep him away. At first it was good to have him there, but it soon became clear that this momentary peace couldn't last. Charlie noticed the secrecy beginning again, but this time it bothered him more. It was clear that he had almost lost her already, and he couldn't bear the thought of being unable to go with her this time. They had shouted at each other, and he had stormed off. By the time he had managed to calm himself down, Hermione was gone.
When she finally saw him, tears of relief began streaming down her cheeks. He held her tight for a long time, and neither of them said anything. Finally she pulled away and broke the silence. "I'm so sorry, Charlie, I didn't mean any of those things I said when we were last together."
"Mione, you don't need to apologize. We were both upset and afraid. All that matters now is that we're back together."
"I was so afraid that I was never going to see you again. That I would never get to tell you that—that I love you." Charlie grinned and kissed her deeply.
"I love you too, Hermione."
"Your family are they—" Hermione realized that in her relief at seeing him she had forgotten about the rest of the Weasleys for a moment.
"They're all still here. Things were a little touch and go with Fred for a while, but he's going to pull through."
"Oh I'm so glad." He pulled her into his arms again. "None of this is going to be easy."
"We'll face it together, love. Nothing can be that bad as long as that's true."
"You're not going back to Romania?"
"I can't even think about doing so now. We can discuss it together in a few months. I'd like it if you would come with me."
She grinned at him. "We'll talk about it later."
Together they walked over to the other side of the Great Hall where Harry and the rest of the Weasleys were. The process of rebuilding wasn't going to be easy, but as long as she had Charlie, Hermione was no longer worried.
